The Last I Saw

The Wordle

SUNDAY WHIRL
asks us to use the Wordle words

THE LAST I SAW
(A Modern Tragedy)

She came into the kitchen, coatless on a freezing day,
And I said , as she knew I would, 'Don't go out that way!'
I offered my woolly jacket but that was treated with scorn.
She was wearing a little white T-shirt and even that was torn.
A typical teenage daughter, she mocked everything I said;
However I might admonish her, she'd simply toss her head.
She preferred her tattooed girl-friends, her Heavy-Metal bands
To the family which loved her, but which often made demands,
In the fullness of time, I was certain, she'd return to us all again,
But a shadow fell over existence as she stepped out into the rain.
I was unaware of finality, although I felt so spurned.
I would have told her I loved her
If only she'd returned.

MAGNETS

Nature's full of wondrous ways that war against free-will.
A Mother bird is always drawn toward a yellow bill.
This sight, which leaves us unaffected, attracts her like no other!
She is compelled to flutter up, a tired worm-laden Mother.
The baby birds show no respect; they screech and nip and peck
Inside her beak , devouring her and leaving her a wreck!
'How odd!' we say 'That birds behave in such a curious way!
If human children behaved like that there would be hell to pay!'
Ah, but they do! When they are born we're utterly bewitched.
We even cope with crying, which is fearsomely high-pitched!
The baby may be ugly, with a newborn colouration,
But parents stand and worship it with utter adoration.
From that day on it rules us, it's beak open ever-wide
And we're forever popping little morsels deep inside!
For eighteen years we cherish it, though it consumes the nest;
With every little thing it does we're crazily impressed!
So never criticise the birds for we are just as bad.

The teen years can be a trial to everyone, including the teen! You have written a strong piece in The Last I Saw, focusing on the hellish situation which occurs when a child runs away. Great cadence and rhyme.

Wonderful poem. Good use of all the words in riming fashion. I also thought of using a teenage daughter scenario, but turned out slightly different.

Thanks!

This worthy of SSS2 I would think! Those teen years so saddening.

The wordle is so sad. I was lucky in my kids' teen years but it was still a hard phase. Excellent use of the wordle words. And I do like the baby birds.

Your wordle poem is just heartbreaking! I'm also dreading those quickly-approaching teenage years. Two very well-written poems here.
