Dread

BOOK BLURB FRIDAY
supplied the imaginary 'book-cover'
THE DREAD

Unable to move, Grace watches the shadows lengthen on the wall.
Her paralysis prevents her seeing any other aspect of her prison room.
With night approaching, so approaches the terrible
 DREAD.
That which is to her left, unseen, lies waiting. Always waiting.
Will help come in time?

REFLECTIONS AT DUSK

Street lights pricking on across the creek.
Trees ink-blotting on the water.
The almost-dark.

Nicely done, and in so few words. It put me in mind of "Wait Until Dark," the Audrey Hepburn movie in which she plays a blind woman. You've given me reasons to root for your protagonist, and offered up the promise of chills and thrills. I'd buy it!

Thanks for participating in Book Blurb Friday. I hope you'll play again next week!

That is downright chilling. It would make a page-turning novel for sure.

I love that you took that sweet little picture and turned it into such a dark piece. And more than that, I love the paradox that the dread itself could be her prison....

I agree with Lisa. It is a chilling blurb. You went in a petrifying direction--almost Stephen King-like.

Have you ever read the book "The Butterfly and the Bell Jar"? It's the true story about a man who became paralyzed, and the only thing he could move was his eyelids. While in the hospital, they had to sew one of his eyelids shut; they were going to sew the other one shut to save his eye. He was unable to speak to tell them, "Don't!" He "wrote" the book by using a letter board and blinking the words, one letter at a time. The fear of being helpless due to not being able to move must be horrible...

You have seen the dark side in this apparently peaceful scene. Fear of the unknown is powerful.
