CARRY ON TUESDAY
asks us to use the words from Sarah McLachlan's novel 'Angel'
Spend a whole lifetime waiting for that second chance.
SECOND CHANCES
(After Patience Strong)
We can spend whole lifetimes waiting
For that hope-for second chance,
For another invitation
To take part in the Living Dance.
It's easy to throw in the towel
When first ones hopes are dashed,
And that little dream you aimed so high
Has fluttered and then crashed.
Remember the dreams of childhood?
Anything was possible then.
But remember how we tried and failed
And never tried again?
'How could I have imagined
I'd ever make the grade?
Better give up dreaming
And be average and staid.'
And so we trudge through a humdrum life
Still hoping that one day
A second-chance might eventuate,
Colouring the grey.
But memories of past failure
Will always hold us back,
Making us defensive
And not on the attack.
Take down those half-forgotten dreams,
Grown dusty on a shelf!
Don't leave everything to chance,
Create that chance yourself!
It's those who try and try and try
Who get there in the end.
Create your own second chances.
Good luck to you, my friend.

WHAT A CHEEK!
This 'naughty' illustration
Belongs to a certain age,
When 'saucy' was a much-used word,
And innuendo was the rage.
The pubescents of the present time
Would find this really boring,
And the thought of lobster involvement
Would surely set them snoring!
Now, when everything is 'out there'
And, also, 'anything goes'
They wouldn't see the purpose
Of this titillating pose.
But so much was forbidden
In the time of which I speak,
That the thought of a little waitress
'Turning the other cheek'
Would have sent boys into paroxisms
Of lascivious delight.
They'd have feasted on the memory
Way, way into the night!
When people are repressed,
(And I should know, for I was there,)
Silly little things like this......
Dainty underwear,
Accidental 'touchings'
A whiff of perfumed air,
The brushing up against one
Of a lock of wayward hair,
Are electrically exciting!
So don't pontificate
About the boring lives we led.
Leading them was great!
