The Uphill Road

POETS UNITED
supplied the topic.... 'Road'

THE UPHILL ROAD

'Does the road wind uphill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.' *
And a good stout pair of walking shoes
Is something I recommend.
The road is certainly not for wimps
Who quickly get out of puff;
There's no let-up from the uppiness
And that makes things quite tough.
This road is designed for walkers
Who never need a rest,
For, sure enough, more road will appear
When you think you've reached the crest.
You hope for a gentle incline
That will give you some relief,
But no! The dratted upwardness
Is quite beyond belief.
For sure the wind will be bitter.
For sure it will pour with rain.
Better roll over in your bed
And go to sleep again.

* With apologies to Christina Rossetti

ASPIRATION

We aim for the stars
But our own earth detains us
Maybe for ever.
