Yesterday's Years

ABC WEDNESDAY

YESTERDAY'S YEARS

They were so slow......
Yesterday's Years.
*
Between birthday and birthday
Stretched a gulf
Across which
One could not even see,
Even shading one's eyes!
*
Christmases
Were divided from each other by
Great stretches of Nothing.
*
The wait for a promised holiday
Was torture,
As days passed
And it grew no nearer.
*
'I can't wait!'
We said.
Surely The Grownups
Could make it happen sooner!
*
Even a day was long.
When one went to bed
One could not envisage the day's earlier wakening:
It was too far removed!
*
A visit from a favourite Aunt
Was cause for untold hours of waiting,
Nose to window,
Breath held in suspension!
*
Then, suddenly,
About thirty years ago,
Life started to gallop!
*
Last Month turned into Yesterday!
Birthdays started
To fall around me like confetti!
One Christmas
Held on to the tail
Of the one before!
They danced the conga
Lined up behind each other!
*
Nor have the years reached
A respectable speed
And kept to it!
*
Even as I write
They accelerate!
*
The G-forces will get me
If I don't watch out!
*

This seems a good time to repeat my first blog here:

Ah, how true are your words today, Brenda! I'm quite sure that when I turned 70 I began having two birthdays a year! How else could I have possibly gotten this old????

Have a great week!

Love this one, I have found it is so true. I keep telling out 9 year old Granddaughter, take the time and enjoy, growing up happens fast and each year it gets faster and faster.

Wonderful humerous and so very true poem. I love the line..birthdays started to fall around me like confetti. I really felt that way as I put all the birthday notations on my 2010 calender. I began to feel old when I saw the year of myself, hubby and close friends. " It makes me almost crazy".

Great poem! It's so true, the years become a cascade as we age, when once they barely flowed.
Loved the birthday poem, too. I believe my heart is still young, but the rest of me has had a few too many birthdays.

I couldn't agree more. I especially like these words: Birthdays started To fall around me like confetti!

Wonderful!

Wonderful poems, - especially the one in your first posting.

I can vouch for the heart and the soul and their eagerness to stay as they always were, young and spritely and full of hope!

Oh, this is so true, Brenda! If only we could slow down time a little. Birthdays come so quickly now that I prefer not to even count them:)

By the way, if you have time, today I have a photo of my fennel again--this time covered in snow.

Great prose, and so true. I have often wondered when the years changed to only be as long as days. Time passes so quickly I feel like I am missing so much.

Wonderful post.

Excellent! The words seemed to drag when you were describing the waiting for time to pass, then when time sped up it seemed the words did too! Love it! (So very true, too!)
