Pam, who was heading for old age, was striving for eternal youth,
And many a likely person had tried to tell her the truth.
“I want to keep my youth’she cried; ‘My youth belongs to me!’
And she went to various experts about longevity.
Said one ‘Yours is a hopeless task; old age is on its way,
And there is nothing in this whole wide world that can make it go away.’
Another said ‘Think noble thoughts, and think of higher things;
A soul that’s pure and upright is the well from which youth springs.’
Yet another said ‘Take fifty pills in the morning and at night
And you’ll feel young and vigorous and retain your youth all right’.
Yet another said ‘Take long brisk walks and never use your car;
Be a vegetarian and never lean on a bar’.
Finally, in desperation, Pam turned to an old friend,
'Please Ann tell me the secret; I’m going round the bend!’
Said Ann ‘If you want to keep your youth, grant his every wish.
I’m not surprised you're hanging-on. He’s really quite a dish!’

THE WEARING OF THE GREEN
The sun was setting as we made our way
To the house of a friend one recent day.
The sun was shining through the trees
Where verdancy decked the canopies.
The hills and dales were lush and green;
Not usual for our summer scene.
December's grass, in New South Wales,
Is as golden brown as corn-cut bales.
The shadows of trees look black as ink,
And the foliage begs for a desperate drink.
It's colourful in a golden way,
Like Britain when bringing in the hay.
Infrequent showers give some ease,
But, sometimes, all they do is tease.
But this year, La Nina, The Girl Child, came!
The weather system we know by name.
Not El Nino, that brings the drought;
(Something we can do without).
We've been awash for weeks and weeks,
With drips and deluges and leaks!
More rain than we have ever seen!
And when flooding stops the world is green!
The dams are filling, but, sad to say,
Many crops have been washed away!
'A land of drought and flooding rain';
That's the Australian refrain.
But, for now, we're fresh and clean!
It's time for the Wearing of the Green!

The older I get, the more I understand the cliche, "youth is wasted on the young."
