Bedraggled

From the local press.

MELLOW YELLOW MONDAY

BEDRAGGLED

It was such a bedraggled December;
We all said we couldn't remember
Such rain! And the clouds
Like enormous grey shrouds!
More like England, and that in November!

After ten years of suffering drought
The sun, it seemed, blinked and went out,
Everyone grizzled
As, daily, it drizzled,
And old fellows got twinges of gout!

The visitors all complained
As it rained and it rained and it rained!
'Your climate's a fraud!'
Said the folk from abroad,
Looking cheated, and thoroughly pained.

'We came here for oodles of sun!
Days of heatwave? We haven't had one!
Your false advertising
Is really surprising!
We're cold and we're damp! Not much fun!'

The young lady you see here depicted,
Found her day out was very restricted.
Her fairy attire
Drooped down in the mire.
And she felt she was really afflicted.

Not even a bright yellow brolly
Could make the poor sweetheart feel jolly.
Her beautiful wings
Were just droopy old things.
Any wonder she felt melancholy!

Never mind! With the dams overflowing,
And everything greening and growing,
It isn't all bad.
Why, we could have had
Something worse!
For it could have been snowing!

FORECAST FOUL!

Look your last on the bright blue sky!(Well, for today, at least!)
A dense and ragged blanket approaches from the East!
The smaller clouds are scurrying in front of the monstrous grey.
One doesn't have to be an expert to foretell a rainy day!

Your first poem reminds me of my late friend Lenore, a very bright lady who always beat me at word games, and who felt, as do I, the language could be fun for those who understood it well.
She would say "bed-raggled" now and then to make me laugh, and these days I can't see the word bedraggled without thinking of her.
