The Reward

The Word

ONE WORD WEDNESDAY

THE REWARD

'Virtue is its own reward'!
What a Victorian saying!
I hear the words of a stern Mama
When offspring suggest straying.
What a very different age it was!
And, oh, how times have changed!
Say it to anyone young today
And they'll think you are deranged!

DISCO BALL

The disco ball is hanging by a thread,
If it falls we'll very certainly be dead;
If it shatters into countless little pieces
We will be gone as well as all life ceases.
It's twirling merrily glinting in the light,
Blues and greens a positive delight.
We dance thoughtlessly, skittering our feet,
Warming-up the ball with our body-heat,
A disco-ball is a thing of little worth,
But what if that ball were called
The Earth?

Ain't that the truth!

I remember being told "virtue is its own reward" and being quite ambivalent about it. I could understand how it could be true, but suspected other things might be their own rewards as well.
