THEME THURSDAY
'Space'
SHRINK PLEASE!
The future'd look a great deal rosier
If Space were just a little cosier.
The concept would be more romantic
If it were slightly less gigantic.
I find that I'm so over-awed
That I become, in some ways, bored!
The whole thing is so very vast
That I just stand, amazed, aghast,
When Scientists, with gay abandon,
Suggest some planet we might land on.
They speak of light-years with panache;
They speak of old worlds burnt to ash!
Worlds collide, Red Dwarfs arise;
They even speak of our demise!
Multiverses which may be
Created for all eternity
Dazzle, boggle and befuddle
And simply leave me in a muddle.
And one thing I don't like at all.........
The damned thing makes me feel so .......
small.

MASSACRED MUSIC!
Do you recall a time, my dears, which was quite a while ago,
When Victor Sylvester played the tunes for that good old 'Quick, quick slow'?
When we rushed to buy the records, because we longed to own
All the latest numbers to play on a gramophone?
And do you recall how we wound it up with a sort of handle thing,
So we could wallow at any time in all that jazz and swing?
And do you recall how it wound down with an almost anguished whine,
And how we kept a special cloth to retain the records' shine?
These poor old cast-off relics are now in other hands,
Treated as coasters, dishes, bowls or even teapot stands.
I saw these at the market, this one swinging in the breeze.
What a way to treat those old discarded memories!
Do you recall the days......? You don't ? I know the reason why.
It's because you're you're nowhere near as elderly as I!

Empyrean sphere
I agree makes us feel small
Your verse says it all
You struck just the right attitude here and I liked your settled thinking of space!!
Beautiful and thought-provoking.
Space can be so overwhelming! It is often difficult to grasp it in terms of some tangible concept! Great poem!
And love that fun poem on records! Many I have seen end up as mobiles!
Vastness seems to make me unconfortable, too. The idea of something "out of control", I believe, always does that to a person.
It's been a while since I read rhymed verse and I really enjoy yours. It is smooth and warm. Almost forgot space was so huge :-)
Thanks for sharing!
Well thought through and yes,,,true but where are we when some will not fly and go boldly where ,,,hehe. But yes,,this makes me feel modest and in awe too! Very well writting I really like the flow of the poem!
Clever rhyme!
A fest for the eyes everywhere, and such wonderful prose!
Thank you.

Both fun and clever pieces...I too am dazzled, boggled and befuddled by the universe!
As for record defacement, one of the shops I frequent has a table full of bowls that are grotesquely molded out of records. I repeat, dazzled, boggled and befuddled...:)

Space is indeed a vast theme in itself whether within us or outside.
Nice piece of verse.
Fun, smart, smile-causing work.
You can say that again, Brenda.. the vastness of the universe makes me feel like some microscopic creature...
It's a good thing the moon "appears" small to us.. else it really would have been too intimidating.. don't you think?
Really liked and enjoyed your poem... and the "small" at the end totally added to the effect! Well done! :)
Expertly rhymed, as always. Your first poem here strongly suggest a genuine interest in the nature of the Universe, despite its awe-inspiring immensity.
Small's good too! Nice twist.
we do enjoy space,
distance keeps huge planets such as sun and moon look small,
lovely take on the theme.
