Merewether Memories

Artist's Impression

A very parochial entry this time.

MEREWETHER MEMORIES.

To build or not to Build
That's been the question.
Whether to retain the old Surf House,
Riddled with cement cancer as it was,
Or to build a rectangle of glass
Three storeys high
In its place.
*
'Retain the History!'
Cried the Old Surfers.
They recalled the heady days fifty years ago,
When they took their first boards
Down to Merewether Beach.
*
'Patch it up!'
Cried the Old Surfers.
They recalled the heady days fifty years ago
When they met their first sweethearts
In the Merewether Surf House.
*
'Desecration!'
Cried the Old Surfers.
*
But the old are relics too.
They have lost the battle.
It will be gone before Christmas.
*
Multitudes of pigeons
Will also feel sad.
*

Goodbye.

Have a great day!

Sad! I hate to see old buildings die!

All in the name of progress. Sad but perhaps the new building will be wonderful too.

Well. Darn. I watch so many buildings disintegrate. Nice poetic tribute!

I so dislike seeing old buildings descend into ruin. Your words were a great tribute.

Nah - seldom does the new eclipse the old.

I'm with Old Surfers and will feel and think this way maybe forever ( I've been in a sad mood since my company bulldozed the mango tree-lined fishpond we used to enjoy at work)
