Speechless Love

CARRY ON TUESDAY

The words in blue are taken from the first lines of an  Anonymous poem.

SPEECHLESS LOVE.
Words will only steal the moment!
Please don't say them! They are trite!
Every love-song says 'I love you',
They're not new! Not shiny-bright!
If we two could have invented
Words of passion, ours alone,
I'd have revelled in your statement,
I'd have gloried in your tone.
But those words that surely flutter
Round your lips and beg for speech,
They're the words of other lovers,
All too easily in reach.
Please don't say them! You'll debase it,
This great happiness I feel,
Turn it into ho-hum language,
When the feeling is so real!
They are spattered over romance,
Like a pattern on a dress,
Meaningless when duplicated,
Just a pretty-pretty mess!
Men who're cheating on their spouses
Use those words to get their way;
One-night-standers, sugar-daddies
Always start things off that way!
So please don't say them, though you mean them!
They are not some precious prize!
All I need is that expression,
Shining, silent, from your eyes.

Lots of that magic here:

True, alas.

Actions sure do out weigh any words spoken at romantic times.

The eyes can say so much. A beautiful plea.

I loved your take on this, and especially loved these lines:

They are spattered over romance,
Like a pattern on a dress,
Meaningless when duplicated,
Just a pretty-pretty mess!

Great visual!

Hi Brenda, to me this is a feel bad, feel good, poem.
I feel badly when those words come so cheaply without true meaning.
I feel better when I realize I only said those lines to the two ladies to whom I was or am married to. And it was a long, long time coming for those two.
I feel really good personally reading the last two lines because I never, never do or would do that. Flirt, yes, and run even faster if those were taken wrongly.
I believe in being faithful so of course they make me feel badly that anyone in the world could do this. But, this situation is what makes the movie and sit-com world go round.
..
Sorry to go on so long on all that. More so, this is a neat little poem with a wonderful rhyme scheme.
It also breaks into four line stanzas. A separation might make for an easier and more meaningful reading??

a perfect reminder that the eyes are a window of the soul & the love we seek shines from them

Perfect! Honest. Full of truth. These lines were particularly fun to read:
They are spattered over romance,
Like a pattern on a dress,

i love the way you dismiss the trite and trivialized cultural appropriation of romance. everything can be spoken without ruse through the eyes.

Hi Brenda,
Wonderful poem
the eyes express their unique message
so much more than words...
Thank you.

Your words that bring back that first-romance blush, when a glance says more than any word could. Somehow we need the words too, though, don't we? And they do seem new and fresh, just for us, especially when matched with loving actions that show more than tell. Thank you also for visiting!
