Reading

WRITTEN FOR ABC WEDNESDAY

READING
(An Acrostic)

Rush and tumble! Noise and speed!
Enter a new world when you read!
All the flurry fades away
Din and chaos dare not stay.
In words, you find the things you need.
New or old, a book to read
Grants you the right to sit awhile
Then face the rude world with a smile.

THE DESCENT.

It's a hilly old place, our town.
Here's a view from the top looking down,
Through the shopping streets way below
To where Hunter's waters flow..
Climbing up to the top is a feat,
Hence the railings they've put by the street,
But it's always worth the climb
For the view to my rear is sublime.
Imagine you turn around,
And this is what you'll have found....
The Pacific Ocean wide,
Spreading on every side.
It's a watery place our city,
The Hunter River is pretty;
The ocean is wide and blue
And we're between the two.

Risk Taking

Journey One

Journey Two

SUNDAY SCRIBBLINGS

chose the topic

RISK TAKING

I'm  a reasonably lively person
At times I'm almost brisk,
But I certainly am not the type
To go in search of risk.
You won't find me sky-diving
Or considering a gamble
And when I walk I take such care
I almost seem to amble.
And yet, not once but twice in life
I've upped and emigrated!

And that's a move that friends of  mine
Have never contemplated.
My risk-takings never physical
It's adventure that I've craved
And thats why joblessness and such
Has been,quite gladly, braved.
What is a risk to one person
Isn't a risk to all
I'm a midget in some areas
But in others I stand tall.

ADVICE

Ask for advice when you're in doubt!
Don't think you can do without.
Verify all that you are told.
If possible sort dross from gold.
Consider all things with great care.
Everybody has good advice to share!

Shadow Show

SHADOW SHOW

Sunshine brings us shadows
Dull days show us none..
How strange! We see the darkness
Only in the sun.

BLOW A FUSE!
(An Acrostic)

Belligerent? Oh no! Not me!
Layabouts like you must see
Our ways of life are not alike!
Why? Don't ask! Get on yer bike!
*
Are you even listening to me?
*
Fool! There's no harm you can do me!
Unless you back-off I'll lash-out!
Seems I must give you a clout!
Ever heard 'I win; you lose'?
This is it! I've blown a fuse!

Sunshine

SUNSHINE
                                                                     (An Acrostic)

Summer, and the skies are blue,
Unless, of course, it rains on you!
Never mind, tomorrow's skies
Surely will bring a nice surprise.
Heavenly weather soothes the mind;
It helps a lot when life's unkind.
Nature blossoms in the sun
Energy floods through everyone.

WRITER'S BLOCK

It's happened to me in the past......
The ideas hit me thick and fast
When I am walking down the street
Or at the butcher's buying meat
Or giving pots and pans a scour
Or even soaking in the shower!
These are times I would not choose
To receive a visit from my Muse!
Sometimes it happens to me when
I haven't even got a pen,
Or even paper! Not a scrap.
And then my Muse, the poor old chap,
Decides, right there, that he's had enough
And leaves my brain in an awful huff.
Some time later, at my ease,
I'm at the computer saying 'Please!
Please return, beloved Muse!'
And, blow me, if he doesn't refuse!
I find he's given me the slip.
A very awkward relationship.
thought-recorder's what I need.
And here and now I plant the seed,
Suggesting to technology
That it creates one just for me.
A thought-recorder would be new....
(No! Voice-recorders just wont do;
They're hard to activate I think
When ones hands are deep in the kitchen-sink!)
But the neatest invention of them all
Would be a service called 'Muse-On-Call.'

Morning Dew

CHEVREFEUILLES HAIKU BLOG

MORNING DEW
(A Haiku)

A gift from the night
Jewels scattered on the grass
Soon to disappear

and
An Acrostic for good measure because I felt like it!

MORE MORNING DEW

Magical moisture from the sky
On the grass see the dewdrops lie
Rippling as the breezes blow
Night-time's gift to us below.
Iridescent pearls that shimmer
Numberless drops that gleam and glimmer
Gaily dancing see them appear.
*
Dewdrops! Each like a tiny tear
Evening does not boast such treasures;
Welcome to one of life's morning pleasures.

ONE OR THE OTHER

In heat or chill our world will end;
Some day, we know not when.
We only know that it will die.
It will be all over then.
We puny little human things
Will burn or we will freeze;
The deserts will take-over,
Or else the icy seas.
The final leaves that drift on down
Will be brown and scorched and charred,
Or else they will be shards of ice,
Brittle and blue and hard.
By red or white we'll be consumed,
As though we have never been,
So let us cherish what we have,
Rejoicing in the green.

Let's Not!

RUBY TUESDAY

LET'S NOT!

I'm a member of a generation
Brought up respecting punctuation.
I no longer really fret
About its daily use, and yet
I can see it has some uses,
Though there are some who make excuses
For slapdash writing, saying that
'All that old stuff is old hat!'
But, see above! There are occasions,
Really vital situations,
When a tiny comma can make a mark
Preserving Grandpa's vital spark!

CHILD ABUSE
(An Acrostic)

Children are our future, our immortality.
How anyone can harm a child is beyond belief to me.
It horrifies and saddens anyone with half a heart!
Listening to tales of horror tears us all apart.
Demons must inhabit those who harm our little ones.
*
All are someone's daughters; all are someone's sons!
Babies in the cradle sometimes lack security!
Unless we all watch out for them how sad their lives will be!
Sympathy is not enough! Raise a banner high!
Everybody has a duty to heed each small child's cry.

PS
Carole organised a particularly pleasant walk for Saturday. We car-pooled and went to Swansea to walk along the Channel. The weather was blustery but spring-like and we took 6000 steps! We walked back through the town invading a few dress-shops before we had a tasty lunch at the RSL and came home. A great day.
Off we go!
Spring has sprung.
Five old wrecks!
Badly lit but otherwise good of everyone.
Maureen, Barbara, Gloria, Pam, Nancy, Jan, Carole and me.

India *

INDIA
(An Acrostic)

It's history stretches way, way back, into the distant past.
Natural wonders and buildings that will, forever, last.
Delhi was a city replete with history;
Indira Ghandi is famous for political oratory.
As one of earth's great countries we respect its way of life
And trust its future is peaceful, with the minimum of strife.

Tom and Jerry

TOM AND JERRY!
(An Acrostic)

Tom-cat, with the bristling whiskers,
Off to catch some mousy friskers,
Maybe you should think awhile.......
*
Are mice worth going that extra mile?
Nearly isn't good enough!
Dinner may prove rather tough!
*
Jerry Mouse is quick and cute!
Eat a dinner of juicy fruit!
Reject all thoughts of mouse-tail soup!
Remember! He'll make you loop the loop!
You'll find the effort not to nice!
Better keep way from mice!

Dark Horse

DARK HORSE
(An Acrostic)

Dazzle was never the word for you;
Always hiding yourself from view;
'Retiring' that was the word we said;
Keeping aloof, inclining your head.
*
How is it you suddenly come to the fore?
Our opinion has changed since days of yore!
Recently you have found your voice!
Suddenly you now state your choice!
Externally you look the same
But we realise you are in the game!

SYDNEY DAWN

It was dark.
The lights of home
Were pricked out like stars.
As we approached they grew to moons;
Small moons that were friendly.
*
Then the sky began to flush
With the excitement of our arrival
*
The ship slid past the bridge.
The flags waved at us.
*
The black buildings
No longer loomed.
Gradually they threw off their cloaks
And turned
To give us a creamy welcome.
*
The water ceased twinkling
And smoothed its silk.
*
Faint voices drifted to us
From the quay-side.
The workers seemed less aware of the drama
Than the sky and the sea!
They whistled, shouted.
*
The spell was broken.
Day dawned.

Rise and Shine*

RISE AND SHINE!
(An Acrostic)

Refreshed we greet the morning sun.
If day has come, the night is done.
Sleepily we rub our eyes.
Each day is a new surprise.
*
All the birds are singing madly.
'Night has gone!' they whistle gladly.
Daisies sparkle in the grass.
*
Sailing by, the white clouds pass.
Happiness is everywhere,
In the sky, the earth, the air!
Now's the time to dance in clover!
Except for me!
I'll just roll over!

THE JOURNEY!
(A Poem for Children)

Major was an elephant with ideas above his station.
To see the world from up above, that was his inclination.
He padded round his zoo enclosure looking at the sky,
Thinking sadly ' Why is it that elephants don't fly?'
He asked his Keeper one fine day and earned this sharp retort...
' Take it from me, old Major, you're just not the flying sort!'
His friend, Giraffe, spoke kindly, and said 'Your trunk is great!
Many another creature would like to share your fate!
Like my long neck, you have a gift that sets you quite apart!
Many a bird would like a trunk but doesn't break its heart!
It just accepts that elephants have trunks and birds have wings,
And lots of other animals have lots of other things.
Look to the earth, dear Major, and see the glories there.'
But Major kept on brooding, gazing up into the air.
He really pined, he hung his head, he went right off his food,
And thoughts of flying in the sky would constantly intrude.
He started wobbling on his legs and looking really sick,
Till his Keeper said 'To the Hospital! And make it double quick!
The traffic's heavy on the roads! I doubt if we'd get by!
Oh what an awful pity that an elephant can't fly!'
'I know' cried Danny, the young boy who worked around the yard,
'Let's tie him to a big balloon! It wont be very hard!'
So they rang up a Balloon Man, who came there very quickly,
When they told him that an elephant was looking very sickly.
They harnessed Major carefully, as the people gathered there,
And very soon that elephant was sailing through the air.
They even supplied a telescope for looking at the view,
And he held it in his trunk as only elephants can do!
He saw the sea, he saw the ground, he saw the earth below,
But the big balloon, blown by the wind, started drifting to and fro!
It twirled around, it bounced a bit, it didn't miss a trick
And soon poor Major bellowed out 'I'm getting travel sick!'
So they brought him back down to the zoo, and he stood there looking shaken!
He said 'I always longed to fly but I was much mistaken!
I wont be silly any more; I'll eat and I'll get strong!
I know now I'm an elephant and I know where I belong!
I belong with four feet on the ground, with the members of my herd.
I'm glad that I'm an elephant and not a little bird!'
