DISTANT NO MORE
Time, which was once a wide, unbounded sea,
An ocean stretching far into a dream,
Is now down at my feet, a little stream,
The 'distant shore' now very near to me.
When, as a child, I viewed eternity,
And saw the water's brilliant colours gleam,
'Forever' was a very simple theme,
Unending time a certain destiny.
But, now, one step is all I need to take
To cross the stream and reach the other side.
How is it that Forever's shrunk so small?
That step, will it be very hard to make?
And, at the last, will Time once more seem wide?
And will I ever understand it all?
You might not like the form but you did an excellent job with it! Your lines read naturally and the rhyme doesn't lead the poem. Really beautiful!
It certainly is a lovely poem.
Oh, these thoughts. I know them but could not have written them so well! Nice work!!
Wow! What a treat to see Tumblewords commenting here. I've the pleasure of knowing her personally for she is a local, a blogger and one neat lady! Small world!
Breathtaking images and your words expressed my daily thoughts. Written so well and it gives me a sense of comfort knowing that I'm not the only one. So nicely done--thanks for sharing!
Bravo! Those are tough and you did it beautifully.
That was great. A life-TIME captured in a nut... I mean in a sonnet-shell..!!!
So well expressed. Lovely sonnet.
"How is it that Forever's shrunk so small?"
Oh, I love this! Beautiful Sonnet!
Profound and lovely thoughts!
Lovely, longing, and romantic...
I think that it may just go in an eternal circle, I'm sure it will be wide once again. :)
Lovely thoughts, indeed!
A very sad, but thought-provoking piece.
You've told the truth so eloquently. I turn 52 next week, and have pondered similarly; although my Gram lived to be 99, so I have a few steps left before I reach the stream.
Your rendering of 'distant' struck all the chords... perhaps only to those of a certain age, but most definitely true. thank you.
