Not So Easy

Not so easy on the eye,
This area for relaxing!
I'd find the coloured 'pebbles'
Quite uncomfortable and taxing.
Even if I closed my eyes
The lids would be invaded,
By brilliance quite invasive
And I'd beg for something shaded.
If I were reading a novel
Bright dots would fill each page,
And, after a while, I'd discard the book,
In a fit of childish rage!
If I were chatting to a friend
In this very startling place,
Little dots of colour would
Start dancing on his face!
I think I'd start to mutter
'How much more can I take!'
As my eyes began to cross
And my head began to ache.
No, give me something soothing
I beige or blue or green.
This agitated colour-scheme
Is certainly not my scene!

LICKY-STICKY PRAWNS

Here in Oz we call a shrimp a prawn (keep that in mind)
It won't matter when you cook this tasty dish!
For after all, in any case, it's the taste that counts
And the taste of this is brilliant as you wish!
It's a perfect meal for summer nights out on the patio
And the prawns look lovely laid out on the plate.
It's a quick and easy recipe that anyone can make
But your guests are sure to label it as 'Great!'
Marinate the prawns in the honey for a while,
Covering with cling-wrap helps a lot.
Then add the garlic, oil and soy and marinate some more,
The lovely flavour's sure to hit the spot.
Skin and chop the mushrooms, cut the onion into chunks,
Also the peppers, one size here 'fits all'.
Thread the lot on skewers, but watch out for the drips!
Some from the marinade are bound to fall!
Your kebabs are set for grilling, with some extra marinade;
Cook them till they curl up at the edges,
Then serve them any way you like, with bread or rice or plain,
With salads or with lots of crispy veggies.
The honey adds a yummy sticky surface to the prawns,
So be sure you  have some napkins standing by!
There'll be lots of finger-licking when you serve these lovely treats!
And your reputation's bound to go sky-high!

Chair Talk

CHAIR TALK!

'G'day to you, Shadow! Thought, today, we'd have a little chat......
About the manufacturing process.... little things like that.
I must say I'd like your opinion on the reason for my holes!
After all, I'm just for sitting; I have no other roles!
It pains me to think that I was made out of strange left-over bits!
After all, I have my feelings and, when somebody sits,
And then says 'What are these holes for?' I feel I want to scream!
It's not as though I'm part of a set, with a sort of matching theme!
But I've just noticed, Shadow, that you look pretty smart!
It's true! When I see you lying there, I think 'A work of art!'
In fact, I think you're The Answer! For, looking at you, I've found
That my 'raison d'etre' is simply you, lying on the ground!
My holes may be rather peculiar, but my shadow is quirky and fun!
I may look odd on a cloudy day, but, wow, I shine in the sun!

TICKETS!

Both Alice and Herbert were sixty.
They were strolling along on the beach
When a bottle bobbed up right beside them!
It was, luckily, right within reach.
Alice unscrewed the top and 'Hey Presto!'
A funny old genie appeared
With a notebook to hand and a pencil
And a strange little feathery beard.
'You're in luck!' said the genie, politely,
' What good fortune is coming to you!
You may both make a wish  and I promise
The wish that you make will come true!'
'I wish for two tickets!' cried Alice,
'To some fabulous holiday isle.
I'll enjoy it so much with dear Herbert!'
'Here is yours' Genie said, with a smile.
Sure enough in her hand was the ticket
To an island of palm trees and bliss!
But Herbert was not at all happy
With the ramifications of this!
'The holiday sounds quite terrific;
A love-nest right down by the sea,
But my wish is that Alice, who's sixty,
Could be thirty years younger than me!
Poor Alice is looking quite faded;
As for me, well I'm youthful and spry!'
*
The Genie then grinned and responded
'All right Herbert. You're ninety! Goodbye!'

Dark Horse

DARK HORSE
(An Acrostic)

Dazzle was never the word for you;
Always hiding yourself from view;
'Retiring' that was the word we said;
Keeping aloof, inclining your head.
*
How is it you suddenly come to the fore?
Our opinion has changed since days of yore!
Recently you have found your voice!
Suddenly you now state your choice!
Externally you look the same
But we realise you are in the game!

SYDNEY DAWN

It was dark.
The lights of home
Were pricked out like stars.
As we approached they grew to moons;
Small moons that were friendly.
*
Then the sky began to flush
With the excitement of our arrival
*
The ship slid past the bridge.
The flags waved at us.
*
The black buildings
No longer loomed.
Gradually they threw off their cloaks
And turned
To give us a creamy welcome.
*
The water ceased twinkling
And smoothed its silk.
*
Faint voices drifted to us
From the quay-side.
The workers seemed less aware of the drama
Than the sky and the sea!
They whistled, shouted.
*
The spell was broken.
Day dawned.

The Curtain Parted

SATURDAY CENTUS
supplied the title.

THE CURTAIN PARTED

It was just a glimpse in passing,
Just a glance and nothing more,
Just a quiver of a curtain,
Where no stir had been before.
Just a flash of dark eyes watching,
Just a blur of a frightened face,
Just a sense of desperation
Before the curtain fell in place.
Maybe I had been mistaken;
Maybe there was nothing there;
Maybe my imagination
Had made me hesitate and stare.
Foolish me, to see a drama
In a breeze-blown curtain's fall!
I shrugged my shoulders, almost laughing,
There was nothing there at all!
But still the visionary instant
Lingered with me all the day.
And my eyes sought out the window
As I homeward made my way.
Heavy curtains drawn completely!
Nothing sinister to see.
Fanciful! Thus I described it,
That image that had worried me.
Till, next day, I read headline,
'Murder victim number two!'
Till I saw the young girl's picture
And there was nothing I could do.

A song I wrote for International Women's Day some years ago. Sorry it's late this time.

HALF THE WORLD

When half of the world seeks for justice
When half of the world seeks for peace
It's absolutely certain that, given time,
The threat of war can cease.
When half of the world seeks compassion
When half of the world hates to fight
It's absolutely certain that, given time,
The future can look bright.
Too long we have stood in the shadows,
Like plants without the sun.
Let us step forth into the blazing light
For the good of everyone.
Our half of the world has the numbers,
Our half of the world has the power
It's absolutely certain that, given time,
We can have our finest hour.
We can lead the way
Into a brand new day
For we are Half of the World.

Pink Tipped

PINK SATURDAY

PINK TIPPED

Not the nails of a lady who's heavily into chores!
What on earth could she possibly do with such very dainty paws?
She couldn't do any gardening; she couldn't wash the clothes.
All she could  do in comfort is sit around and pose!
She couldn't play touch-football or make castles in the sand,
And peeling the potatoes would be positively banned!
I agree they're rather pretty, with their delicate pink bows,
But 'Handsome is as handsome does' as everybody knows.

                                                 Gerald Gee

AS RED AS IT GETS!

The splash of blood in Gerald's cartoon
Is as red as plum jam in a spoon.
It shows up scarlet, brilliant, bright,
Because the victim's clothes are white!
Think of the uniforms of old!
Ruby red and blazing bold.
Think a while and you'll understand
Why that colour was in demand!
When a man was hit and blood had spurted
His fellow soldiers were disconcerted!
As it dribbled, soaked and oozed
Other men became confused.
'We never thought of blood!' they brayed,
'But this sight's made us quite afraid!
We think we might lay down our arms!
That red has raised some loud alarms!
All the red that I can see
Makes me think it could be me!'
But, on a coat already red,
No-one could see old Tom had bled!
'Let's face the enemy with aplomb!
Nothing's the matter with our friend, Tom!'

Uprising

BLACK AND WHITE WEEKEND

UPRISING

Out of the shadows, into the light.
Out of the dull and into the bright.
Walking doesn't take much skill
But what a pity it's all uphill!

 DILEMMA!

A Princess, neither rich nor good,
Wandered in the wild, wild wood.
Her dress was just a hand-me-down,
Nothing like a royal gown.
Her shoes were thin; she felt the stones.
She was far removed from royal thrones!
Her parents were both church-mouse poor;
No crown jewels were in store.
Sadly, in the family-tree,
There was inherent poverty!
'Oh lackaday!' the Princess sighed,
'Why can't I be a rich man's bride!'
Suddenly, there appeared a frog!
(Of course, he was hiding behind a log.
If I searched for another rhyme
That would take up too much time!)
The princess smiled bright as can be,
Saying 'This must be the Prince for me!
Come, dear Frog, let us embrace!
How nice to have you on my case!'
She'd heard, you see, that froggy kisses
End up revealing what true bliss is.
Handsome Princes, under spells,
Pop out in time for wedding bells!
The poor Princess was very eager,
Though Froggy's sex-appeal was meager.
She cried 'My lips are longing for you!
Already, darling, I adore you!'
The Princess thought she'd got it made!
Gold-digging was her stock-in-trade.
She lunged at froggy, lips all pursed,
Crying 'Kiss me, Froggy! Do you worst!
Sorry! I mean your best, of course!'
(A sentiment she had to force!)
'Hold hard!' cried Froggy, 'Let's get things straight.
I admit that I can hardly wait,
For though you're not exactly rich,
There's nothing like you in my ditch!
But please consider, before we kiss
That this could be a hit or miss!
I might turn human, I really might,
And bring to you your heart's delight.
I might be a Prince, awash with jewels,
Made for love and fighting duels.
I might stand before you, strong and tall!
But things might not go that way at all.
The very force of my D.N.A.
Might make things go the other way!
How do you fancy, sweet young thing,
The joys that Froggy love could bring?
You say you love me; you will not mind
Erotica of a froggy kind!
If you turn amphibean, you wont care!
We'll be such a green and slimy pair!
So let us kiss! You may become
Entirely happy as a tadpole's Mum!'
So there you have it! She had to choose!
Should she take the risk with so much to loose?
Would a rich Prince lift her off the shelf?
Or would she become a Frog herself?
I think I'll call the Princess 'Emma'.
Now I've got a rhyme for
WHAT A DILEMMA!

Inseparable

                                                                                                              Malina

INSEPARABLE

Inevitable separation
Gives the lie to the very word.
No lovers are truly inseparable;
The idea is absurd.
How ever closely-knit you are
To the one that you adore,
There are clearly many, many times
When one walks out the door.
The desire not to be separate
Is another thing again;
To be so utterly dependent
That each parting gives one pain.
One can, I suppose, be conjoined in thought,
And some have learned the art;
To be 'together' mentally,
Though physically apart.
*
The other side of the coin
Is less pleasant than one would wish!
To be apart though together........
That's a very different kettle of fish!

PREHISTORIC PASSIONS!

The passion for pre-history
Is something of a mystery.
I refer, of course, to certain little boys.
Why should the little threes and fours
Be so entranced with dinosaurs
Preferring them to all their other toys?
I can't see the attraction here!
There's not much interaction here!
Not much to cuddle that is very sure!
And yet I see Triceratops
Is much preferred to lollipops!
What's the attraction of a dinosaur?
