Fireworks

CHEVRE FEUILLE
asks for a haiku on the subject

FIREWORKS

Spurting into life
Hanging like chrysanthemums
In an instant, dead

UNAVOIDABLE

We cannot avoid the void.
There is more of it
Than anything else.
It is all around us,
Waiting.
We, who are not of the void,
Are imaginery.
Look at this hand,
Tapping the keys.
The hand will wither,
The keys will destruct,
But the void will go on unheeding.
We will step off into it
One day,
Maybe soon.
We cannot avoid the void.

Whose Hues?

Painting A Traffic Light

BLUE MONDAY

WHOSE HUES?

When Sadie stayed with Granny
Granny always did her best
To further her education
So she set a little test.
Sadie was only four years old
So very young and small
So Granny tested her colours
To see if she knew them all.
'What colour is grass?' she questioned
And 'Green' came the answer back.
'And what's the colour of Sootie cat?'
The child responded 'Black.'
'Tell me the colour of lipstick'
The kindly Granny said,
And quick as a flash the answer came...
'I know what it is. It's red!'
When asked the colour of the sky
The child piped up with 'Blue!'
And Granny was delighted
With the colours that she knew.
*
When Granny was saying her farewells
She said 'Please come again!'
And Sadie surprised her by saying
'You might know your colours by then!'

William Shakespeare Caricature Photo

SHAKING THE SPEAR
I have tinkered with the first lines of The Bard's sonnets.

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
I turn my mind from memories too fraught;
When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes
I tell myself that all they say is lies.
Then, weary with toil I haste me to my bed
Allowing gentler thoughts to fill my head.
As an unperfect actor on the stage
I try to turn my back on pain and rage.
Let those who are in favour with their stars
Make out that life has left them free of mortal scars.
My glass shall not persuade me I am old,
Until this heart of mine is dead and cold.

Dear Shakespeare, thank you for each opening line.
The other silly bits , I fear, are mine.

PS

It's our son, Greg's, birthday today.

I wanted another daughter,
But I'm not complaining now.
Ever since you showed up
I've been saying 'Wow!'
You invade our refrigerator
For something nice to chew!
But I forgive you, Gregory!
Happy Birthday to You!

Masks

The Wordle

Ted Bundy

Charlie Peace

THE SUNDAY WHIRL
asks us to use all the words in the Wordle

MASKS

Murderers should look like murderers, that is what we feel.
Snapshots of the guilty should certainly reveal
A bestiality of mind, lips that are mean and thin,
And a hollow, sallow appearance of the eyes and of the skin.
The way they stand, a gesture, captured for all time,
Should represent their  act of perfidy and every heinous crime.
Their arms should be hanging by their sides like those of an ape-like  creature;
Their utter degradation should strike us in every other feature.
The thought of their touch should appal us, for they have sent to their deaths
Other human beings. They've snuffed-out their living breaths.
Ted Bundy is a deceiver; he looks so suave and smart;
Charlie Peace is an 'honest' man.....his looks reveal his heart!

ONE ON THE NOSE

Since I am not Muhammad Ali
I sting like a butterfly and float like a bee!
Uncoordinated! That's my story;
Definitely never, never bound for glory.
I fly like an elephant and swim like a pig!
I can't even do an Irish Jig.
I dance like a cuttlefish and leap like a worm.
I'm old and battered and quite infirm.
I throw like a snake and jump like a mole
And golf balls never end up in the hole.
But I'm very, very, very good at just being me.
That's one on the nose for Muhammad Ali!

One of the Rest

POETIC BLOOMINGS
asks us to consider 'rest'

ONE OF THE REST

There are some who hit the high spots,
Have adventures, pass each test;
There are some who are successful........
As for me, I'm with the rest.

There are some who are athletic,
Jumping hurdles with the best,
Winning lots of shining trophies........
As for me, I'm with the rest.

There are some who earn big money,
Keep it in a treasure-chest,
Eat out at the best of restaurants......
As for me, I'm with the rest.

There are some who wear high fashion,
Always look superbly dressed,
Look as though they're from the cat-walk......
As for me, I'm with the rest.

There are some who make me jealous,
Make me miserable and depressed.
Lordy, lordy, how I hate them!
Even as I am impressed.

THROUGH THE FLY-SCREEN

A painterly view seems to add to the scene,
When it's daubed by the mesh of the window screen.
And the weight of the jumps on the trampoline
Are caught in time and clearly seen.
Shadows make grey of the grass's green.
(Banjo, however, is not too keen.)

Free Choice

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS

FREE CHOICE

Is it inside-out or outside in?
Tails you lose and heads you win.
Is it the inside from without
Or is it the other way about?
I know because I'm very wise.
Incidentally, there's no prize!

KNOCK KNOCK!

When Opportunity knocks
Think and think again;
Maybe joy is beyond that door;
Maybe grief and pain.
For Opportunity is two-faced;
It's claims are so inviting.
The very word seems synonymous
With a future that's exciting.
Yet many a snake-oil merchant
Has used that very word,
Making claims that are later proved
To be patently absurd.
One's instincts are so vital,
When opportunity comes your way.
Look behind the weasle words
The offerer may say.
Better an opportunity missed
Than an action you'll regret.
Turn away from the pyramid scheme
Or the very unlikely bet.
But if an opportunity presents itself
Right out of the blue,
And you're absolutely certain
That it's exactly right for you,
Grab it with both hands, my friend,
Take the ball and run,
Step out from under the looming clouds
And take your place in the sun.

Hanging About

SATURDAY CENTUS
http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com.au/
asks us to use this illustration in only 100 words

HANGING ABOUT!

There was a beginner called Paul
Who decided to climb up a wall
He found as he swung
That he dithered and hung
And he just didn't like it at all!

So he cried out 'I just cannot bear
Being dangled way up in the air!'
Then he started to yelp
'Please give me some help!
I'd climb down but I simply don't dare!'

So his partner, a fellow called Fred
Yelled out 'Please don't fall on my head!
I'm certain you will
For you haven't much skill,
And the crashing is something I dread.'

But Paul said 'I can't take much more'
And they both ended up on the floor!
A Steep Drop!
And a Full Stop!

WHAT THE BUTLER SAW

There once was a Butler called Bertie
Who couldn't stand anything dirty.
If he saw a smudge
He'd be bearing a grudge
From lunch-time till after eight thirty.

He'd use his spy glass, ascertaining
Which small speck of dust was remaining,
His back grew quite bent
For wherever he went
He was always intent on complaining.

The Sounds of Silence

CARRY ON TUESDAY
asks us to use this quote from David Whalen

I listen to the silence as you do also

THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE

There is no such thing as silence.
If you listen you'll agree.
For there are sounds we do not hear
Or so it seems to me.
I rarely stop to listen
To the sound of breathing in
Though I'm forced to hear the churning
Of the traffic's passing din.
I don't hear my own footsteps
As I walk across the floor,
Yet I'm conscious of the crashing waves
As I wander on the shore.
The ticking of the kitchen clock
Is constant but unheard,
As is the rhythmic chirping
Of some merry distant bird.
When you stop to listen,
As, I'm sure, you rarely do,
You will also hear those 'silent' sounds
And listen to them too.

UP AND AWAY!
I don't know what it's advertising;
I only know that it's surprising!
Who wouldn't notice this visual joke
With it's happy little airborne bloke?
