Indian Summer

OUR WORLD TUESDAY
http://ourworldtuesdaymeme.blogspot.com.au/

INDIAN SUMMER

This was the view I saw today. The weather was divine.
All through the days of summer the sun just refused to shine.
But May has been stupendous, summer weather every day,
Though winter and its rigours are only weeks away.
This is Caves Beach, New South Wales, the choir went there to sing,
And all the world seemed happy to hear our carolling!
We used to take the children to Caves Beach, long go,
But it's years since I have been there, how long I don't know.
Back then, and it must be thirty years, it was a modest little place,
But now it's become up-market, with a very different face.
I suppose I should mourn the passing of a bit of history
But Caves Beach is still delightful, or so it seems to me.

CRABBITY
(A Poem for Children)

Crabbity, Crabbity, wave your claws.
I'm in my world, you're in yours.
You breathe water, I breathe air,
I'm up here and you're down there.
Crabbity, Crabbity, is it cool
Way down there in your little pool?
Do you sometimes swim to big dark caves
Way. way under the rolling waves?
Crabbity, Crabbity, do you wish
That you were a little silvery fish?
Or do you wish you could leave the sea
And be a little boy like me?

PS
I spoke of the choir singing at Caves Beach in the first poem above. Well, here we are in full voice.
Jan was performing for 'Sadie, the Cleaning Lady.'
I 'did' some poems. (I was having a bit of trouble with my scarf too!)

Treasure Hunt

MY WORLD

TREASURE HUNT

These items are on the circuit, going round and round,
A sort of hurdy-gurdy of being lost and found.
Did Grandma give you that pink vase? Well, sell it at the fete;
Though you are growing tired of it somebody else can't wait
To add it to their collection! They'll think it such a find!
And you are very certain that your Grandma wouldn't mind.
But when you come back next year, as you are sure to do,
You'll find your pink vase is for sale and standing in full view.
Maybe you'll buy it back again; you have a conscience now.
Last year's buyer had no taste. You'll buy it anyhow.
Your conscience may be pricking you.....poor Grandma, poor old thing!
You'll put some flowers in it when they blossom in the Spring.
But what's the betting you'll be back, donating it next year?
It's on the hurdy-gurdy! How often will it appear?

DATE BAIT
From an opening line 'donated' by Mad Kane

A woman went out on a date
With a man who used bank-notes as bait.
When she found they weren't real
She said 'You are a heel!
I won't speak to you, let alone mate!'

Persuasion

PERSUASION

A fellow who tried to persuade
His girl-friend to stop being staid
Was thrilled to the core
When she shouted out 'Sure!'
And took off her clothes and obeyed!

FRAUD

Once, when I was a little lad,
It happened I'd done something bad.
So the Vicar asked me round to tea,
And spoke, with stern sobriety,
About his life as a boy in school
Where he had learned the golden rule.
He told me he'd never picked a quarrel,
Being so utterly, utterly moral.
He said that he would always look
For guidance to the Holy Book.
And, true, I saw it there myself,
Prominent on his shining shelf.
But further along I also found
Another tome, all leather bound.........

High Flyer

HIGH FLYER

I was only sixteen when the circus came to town.
I was entranced with the elephants, the ringmaster, the clown,
But, most of all, I just adored that girl on the high wire!
My teenage soul was filled with love and an overwrought desire.
Her spangled dress, her long blonde hair, her strong, athletic thighs
Captured my heart long, long before I gazed into her eyes.
I ran away from home that night . How eagerly I ran!
The circus was deserted as I found her caravan.
'Mitzi' was painted on the door. 'Mitzi!' my poor heart sighed.
But greater joy was to follow, when she ushered me inside!
What an initiation! What a long night of joy!
What an amazing experience for a little old country boy!
Of course she was much older, but not really over the hill;
She was twenty or twenty-one; that added to the thrill.
I was so besotted that I couldn't leave her side;
I could think of nothing else although, sometimes I tried.
I'd hang around the Big Top, as I watched her twirl and leap,
Until the boss said 'If you stay you've got to earn your keep!'
So I became Patches, the foolish clown, sporting a big red nose,
And I learned some silly patter, and struck a silly pose.
I'd dreamed of being a doctor but that went by the board;
All I wanted was Mitzi, the high flyer I adored.
*
Last week another doe-eyed boy came knocking at her door.
I heard her say 'Hallo, my love! You're just what I'm looking for.'
*
Mitzi's performing her tricks tonight. She doesn't realise
I've cut one rope almost right through!
Won't she get a surprise!

ROAD RAGE
(An Acrostic)

Ridiculous behaviour! Thoughtless and obscene!
Only an idiot would rage, if you know what I mean.
As though we can't cooperate and use the roads together
Decently taking heed of special needs and tricky weather.
*
Rude gestures never ever help they only make us mad
As for fights, there's not a one that isn't really bad!
Get wise, you drivers! Learn to share the only roads we've got!
Ending as a statistic doesn't help an awful lot!

Guilty Conscience

      Norman Rockwell

MELLOW YELLOW MONDAY

GUILTY CONSCIENCE

I didn't mean to do it
And that's the honest truth!
I threw a stone and he bit on it
And now he's a broken tooth.
I always throw a ball for him
Whenever he barks 'Please!',
But then I threw this little rock
Just for a little tease.
And 'Crunch!' he went and 'Yow!' he went
And he whimpered all night long,
And Mummy said that I had done
Something completely wrong.
So Bingo's feeling mad at me,
And Bingo's all I've got.
My conscience hurts......it really does.
My conscience hurts a lot.

Picasso: Girl Before a Mirror

TO SEE OURSELVES

Sometimes I look in the mirror
And I like what I can see.
A smiling, bright, attractive person
Smiles right back at me.
Sometimes I look in the mirror
And I see a sad old hag,
Whose face is full of wrinkles
Like a crumpled paper bag.
Sometimes I see a credit face,
Sometimes a debit vision.
Sometimes I view myself with glee,
And sometimes with derision.
I rarely look in the mirror
And see my averageness.....
A plain but pleasant lady....
No more,
No less.

No Sense of Direction!

SUNDAY SCRIBBLINGS
suggests the topic 'Always.'

NO SENSE OF DIRECTION!
A sincere cry  from the heart.
If anyone still alive knows the old song, sing along!

Seems I lose my way,
Always.
Each and every day
Always.
No map in my mind
So I always find
Routes are so unkind
Always, always.
Coming to the lights
Always
Lose my lefts and rights
Always.
Sitting in the car
Lose my guiding star
Know I won't get far!
Just always!
*
How they ridicule,
Always
Say that I'm a fool,
Always.
When I take the wheel
How  ashamed I feel
Brain-cells all congeal
Always, always.
When I chose a lane,
Always,
This is my refrain
Always.
Is it right or left
Why aren't I more deft!
I will be bereft
For always.

A MATTER OF OPINION

Marlene gazed at Wesley, looking him up and down;
They'd just returned from a night out at a restaurant in the town.
They'd met their friends and wined and dined; and now the hour was late;
Thought Wesley 'Marlene's in the mood! And I can hardly wait!'
Marlene moved up to Wesley in a rather sultry way.
And Wesley thought 'Well, now we come to the end of a perfect day!'
'Darling' murmured Marlene 'Has anyone ever said
That you're God's gift to women?'....That's exactly what she said!
Wesley said 'No!!!!', and Marlene spat, with more than a hint of spite,

'Then why did you act as though you were when we were out tonight?'

The Other

The Wordle

SUNDAY WHIRL
asks us to use all the words in the wordle

THE OTHER

Why does 'The Other' always fascinate?
Why do demons and goddesses appeal?
Why do their rituals keep us on our toes?
Why aren't we content with what is real?
Indigenous peoples way, way back in time
Created sacred beings to adore;
Now we visit the cinema and there, before our eyes,
Are vampires, and werewolves and much more.
We string the tales together and scare ourselves to death;
The significance of 'the other' never fades.
Creatures leap on mountain summits, or lurk in mystic caves,
Or dance their faery dances in green glades.
We've elaborated stories as the years have gone on by,
Of elves and goblins, wizards and old hags.
What is our intention as we conjure-up our myths?
Our enthusiasm never, never flags.

SOARING

'A Brand New Facility.'
Thus is it described in the press.
But 'facility' is a cold word,
A word belonging to officialdom.
I hear echoes
Of other,
More delectable words.....
Such as
Speed,
 Youth,
Vigour,
Danger,
 Experiment.
And I see the clouds echoing the sea
And the sea echoing the structure.
I see a man-made wave
Echoing the others
Beyond Bar Beach.
I see a body flying
Through crystal air,
Echoing the strivings of Icarus.
And, in this picture,
I see a work of art.
