Mothers' Meeting

Very nearly time to go;
The lengthening  shadows tell us so.
Womens' gossip, baby-lore,
What has gone and what's in store.
Recipes and chitter-chatter;
How to stop from getting fatter.
In-law problems! Sleepless nights!
How to put the world to rights!
Gardening tips and recipes,
Book suggestions. Mysteries?
Character assassinations!
Husbands' terrible relations!
We could talk all night, although
The lengthening shadows bid us go!

TWO CHAIRS
(A reminder of our two Mothers)

They may have gone
But these live on.....
The friendly chat
Of this and that,
The cheerful smile
Lingers awhile,
The happy laughter
Echoes after.
I see them still.
I always will.
No-one is dead
While their name's still said.

The Eye Of the Beholder

'Get rid of that tree, Mum!'
That was my son speaking.
True the tree is past it's best,
Straggly and creaking.
Although the leaves so far above
Cast a lovely shade
It's not a thing of beauty
In some lovely  sylvan glade!
*
'I love that tree against the fence'
That was Pam, my friend.
'I love the way the branches
Seem to gently curve and bend.
I love the Oriental look
Against the new bamboo.
If you should chop it down I know
That you would spoil the view!'
*
This is my 'new' garden,
Not wild as it once was,
But I find I like the new look,
And, partly, that's because
I have a straggly, past-it tree
That, who knows why, appeals to me.

POKOLBIN

Any Sunday, any time, and any sort of season
Novocastrians take a drive, and for a very good reason.
They drive to the Hunter Valley through rich and ripening vines
Forgetting that, beneath them, lie the tunnels of the mines,
And they come upon Pokolbin, where the glorious gardens spread,
With the little Brokenback Mountains rising far ahead.
Twenty-five acres of gardens each with its own design
And outdoor tables made for lazing, sipping Hunter Valley wine.
With thirty-five thousand roses, they could wander round for weeks,
Unless they were diverted by the riveting boutiques!
It's a garden, it's a playground, it's a place to ease your mind,
The Hunter Valley Gardens are joy. And what a find!

Enigma

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/

ENIGMA

What lies behind
The half-drawn blind,
Making shades of dark and light?
I only know
The gentle glow
Seems, artistically, just right.

FOLLOW THE LEADER

Two years ago I took this shot;
Already life's changed quite a lot!
*
See my grandsons stepping out.
One's the leader without a doubt.
Harry, so very sure and steady;
Max a toddler, a mite unready.
The future seems to lie ahead
With Max to follow Harry's tread.
But will things change as years go on
And these lovely 'baby' days have gone?
When they're grown-up will they find
That Harry's the one who walks behind?
Oh to be around and see
How the future years will be!
*

PS
Rebecca and I went to see this film the other day. I thought it was superb! Rebecca couldn't understand why I shed a tear or two, because it wasn't a sad film (except for glimpses of the King's turmoil) and it was very, very funny in places. But I was transported back to my early days when hearing the King's hesitant (but rather endearing) speeches was part of my life. I think it's in line for an Oscar, but then, I'm often wrong about such things.

Aftermath

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/

AFTERMATH

The rain has pelted down this year,
Allaying all our fears.
The water in Queensland's dams, they say,
Will last for twenty years!
But before that came ten years of drought;
The grass grew sparse and brown,
And little 'Japanese' gardens
Sprouted all over town.
At first I found them 'clinical',
For lush green lawns I was craving;
They seemed to say, too blatantly,
'Look! We're water-saving!'
But I have grown to like them;
They look so calm and neat.
And the shadows cast by rocks and plants
Make the picture quite complete.
We're making a 'Japanese' garden
In our little courtyard space.
Even with rain pouring down
They ameliorate the place.

ALL EARS!

This-morning I had to run a session
For sinners needing a confession.
In my parish there's so much sin
I can scarcely fit them in!
A double-windowed booth is needed,
So two at a time can be acceded!
The village is rife with lust and crime
So listening takes up all my time!
An elderly gentleman came in first
Whispering something about his thirst!
It seems he'd been drinking to excess;
It relieved his spirit to confess.
He comes in often with this old story,
Hoping that he will 'go to glory'
If he admits he's out of line.
Then off he goes to drink more wine!
As he droned on with the same old list....
Brandy, whiskey, nothing missed....
I sensed a movement to my right
There, in the shadows, out of sight.
A pretty girl, all swathed in black
Came close and whispered in the crack.
And, my! That was a revelation!
She was in a tricky situation,
Involving the local Mayor no less!
She'd disgusting items to confess!
Also involved was the Mayor's son!
I can't tell you the terrible things she'd done!
Of course, I'm innocent as the day
But I had to take note of the things she'd say.
I frequently asked for repetition,
To reinforce the girl's contrition.
And, if I required an explanation,
I'd delve into her motivation.
'That's not quite clear' I'd whisper low;
'There's so much more I need to know.'
Other parishioners, there, were waiting,
And the poor young girl kept hesitating.
'Don't be afraid' I gently said;
Then 'Did you defile the marriage bed?'
Confession's normally over soon,
But we lingered until afternoon!
(The man admitting inebriation,
Gave-up, on viewing the situation.)
She went home cleansed, a holier soul,
Innocent, unblemished, whole.
But I said, for I know the ways of men,

'Come back, dear, if it happens again!'

Quill

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/

QUILL

What will you write today, feathery pen?
Will you write of days in the garden once again?
Will you scrawl on the fence in your usual way
'I had a beautiful day today!
The sun was warm and the grass was long,
The birds enchanted me with their song.
I felt so green, so tall, so straight;
There was so much beauty to contemplate!'
What will you write today, feathery pen?
Will you write of days in the garden once again?

A BEE IN MY BONNET!

Do you recall the Beehive? No, not the one with bees?
But the 1960s hair-do, requiring a lot of 'tease'!
My hair was always whispy and body-less and fine,
But Beehives were the fashion so, of course, I made it mine!
But the struggle and the anguish simply can't be overstated!
The visits to the salon which were frequent and much-hated;
The sitting in the chair as pretty hairdressers tut-tutted,
And their remarks, so critical, which made me feel quite gutted.
'If Modom had more hair' they'd say, 'We'd be able to produce
Something elegant and smart, but, in your case, what's the use?'
'I must look like my friends!' I'd cry 'A poor workman blames his tools!
Modom wants a Beehive! Supply it! Them's the rules!
The customer is always right! So go ahead! Beehive me!
Be creative! Something grand is what you must contrive me!'
And so they duly went ahead, with shampoo, and with rinse,
And a lot of other 'condiments' I haven't noticed since!
Once washed, my little bit of hair lay limply on my head,
Until the wretched rollers made it wide and high instead.
Then came the awful dryer, and a scalp all burning hot,
But a Beehive would be my reward so I didn't mind a jot.
Back-combing! Is it done these days? It's a wonder we survived it!
But hair demanded torture as the hairdresser Beehived it!
The hair was, first, teased one way, and then, as Modom cursed,
The whole revolting process was immediately reversed.
Now all the in-between hair was tangled, knotted, matted,
And the net-result was Modom looking very woolly-hatted!
Now the clever part! A few stray strands, left longer and still pliable,
Were spread out over all the mess and made to look reliable.
Indeed, when it was smoothed and glossed, it really looked a treat,
Like some enormous hairy egg, quite good enough to eat.
Now for the spray and do not think I'm talking of a puff.
Great streams of it for evermore it seemed were not enough!
At last came the displaying, with triumphant shouts of glee,
And the most excited person there was Beehived little me!
I was modern, I was 'with it',( though we didn't use that phrase.)
I paid the pretty hairdresser and heaped great songs of praise.
I peered then, at the outside world, was it a little wet?
If so, I'd need the plastic bonnet one dared not forget!
I'd hurry home before the nasty elements could play
Fast and loose with my great hair, and ruin my whole day.
There followed then a week of care, of lying stiff in bed,
Making sure that nothing spoilt the glory on my head!
( I didn't need a 'headache', my hair had other uses;
I didn't need to parrot any other old excuses!)
Of course, I didn't wash it! Just the lightest surface brush,
And a patting into place of all the bits that I might crush.
But, inevitably, bits began to flop and droop and sag!
By the ending of the week I was a hide-in-the-cupboard hag!
Come Saturday I'd have to go through all the whole routine,
So that I could strut about as the local Beehive Queen!
Was ever there a torture so designed to lay us low?
Did everybody suffer as I did I want to know!
My hair today is flat and fine, and 'doing its own thing'.
It doesn't mind a rainy day or the breezes battering.
I'm so delighted it's no more, that silly fashion craze!
Whoever coined lying words and said
THE GOOD OLD DAYS?

Mystery Object

MYSTERY OBJECT

I found them lying, cast aside, behind a market stall;
Pieces of wood with holes in them! They made no sense at all!
They made me think of old stale cheese, though I realised I was wrong!
Bu what could be the use of them? Where could they belong?
I puzzled for a moment over my bits of wood
But, in the end, I shrugged and said 'Well, the shadow's pretty good!

DOWN MEMORY LANE!

A poor old dear sat sobbing on a park bench in the sun;
It was plain to see she'd had her day; in fact, her race was run.
At last a friendly gentleman sat down there, by her side,
And gently asked her why it was she sat there and she cried.
'Can I do something for you? You're clearly quite distressed;
There might be little I can do but I can try my best'.
'I'm the luckiest of women'' she wiped her eyes and sighed;
'You see, it's only recently that I became a bride......
He started as a toy-boy (well, I've reached that time of life)
But, recently, we've married, and I'm now his loving wife.
As you can see, I'm elderly, and hardly in my prime,
While he is only thirty-five, but we have a lovely time.
After a night of passion he brings breakfast up to bed,
He's a qualified chef, you see, so I'm wonderfully fed!
But he's got a lot of money so we dine out every night
And I wear the pearls he's bought me. They're very big and bright.
He's handsome, virile, six foot three and he's got a lovely smile!'
Once more the lady bowed her head, sobbing all the while.
'Oh!' cried the weeping lady, 'Oh what I wouldn't give
To be able to cast my mind back
And remember where I live!'

Summer Sail

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/

SUMMER SAIL

Oh the blissful cool of sails
When the summer heat prevails.
Just to see them overhead
Makes the red-heat much less red!
You may say you prefer a tree
With all its leafy majesty!
You may sneer at this man-made
Attempt at offering some shade!
But see the patterned filigree!
We can enjoy both sail and tree!

An Arm And A Leg
(An acrostic explanation)

A Carpenter in days gone by
Never merely made a chair
*
Also included were extra 'limbs'
Representing, each, a spare.
Money was scarce in those far-off days
*
And nothing was neglected;
Nothing was 'throw-away' back then;
Decades of wear were expected.
*
As arms and legs might wear out first
*
Leaving the owner short
Each Carpenter supplied the spares;
(Gaining profit, I'd have thought!)

Little Red Engine

SHADOW SHOT

LITTLE RED ENGINE

On holiday in Sydney, at the Harbour-side,
Two old fogey tourists thought to have a ride
On a Little Red Engine parked there in the sun.
Our legs were getting tired and we thought it would be fun.
So we clattered round the wide Domain, past all the flowers and trees
Having a really lovely time. We're easy folk to please!
When we arrived at the farthest gates we were quite delighted!
The Art Gallery was close at hand! And so we both alighted.
A roam around the gallery, coffee at the cafe
And then we clattered back again!
What a lovely day!

OUT LIKE A LIGHT!
(An Acrostic)

Our baby screamed like a banshee baby!
Upset by the sound of fireworks, maybe?
Tickling didn't seem to help!
*
Loving hugs just caused a yelp!
Irritation grew apace!
Kisses brought on more hysteria;
Eyes (that's ours) grew ever blearier!
*
Anguished howls just rent the air.
*
'Little sweetie' didn't care!
Ineffectual our placating!
Goaded, we were contemplating
Having him adopted, maybe!
Then he 'dropped off '! Naughty baby!

Me And My Shadow

SHADOW SHOT
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/

ME AND MY SHADOW
(To the old tune of the same name.)

Me and my shadow
Strolling by the lake one day.
Me and my shadow.
Which will be the one to break away?
Yes, I can see you there
We are a pair
If you were lost I know that I'd care.
Yes, me and my shadow
On a walking holiday.
*
-----------------------------------------------------

There's lots of it!

The great idea.

ROCKING HEAT!

If I were a Millionaire. I'm not, and more's the pity,
I wouldn't invest in buildings in the heart of any city.
I'd put millions into Hot Rocks, because I'm fascinated
By the endless possibilities that soon may be created.
*
If I were a Scientist. I'm not; I'm really somewhat dim,
My chances of solving 'everything' would be extremely slim!
I'd concentrate on  Hot Rocks, because it seems to me
That Hot Rocks will enable us to prevent calamity.
*
Way, way down and down and down, and way, way down some more
Hot rocks can be located and the energy that they store.
In very simple terms, it seems that pipes can be injected,
Then water poured down to the rocks and, when it's hot, collected.
*
When the boiling water's up again it will convert to steam,
Creating the pristine energy that is everybody's dream.
If I were a Millionaire Scientist I'd give all I was worth
To the people who're Hot-Rocking, the saviours of the earth.

Masquerade

Brenda Bryant

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/2010/02/shadow-shot-sunday-90.html

MASQUERADE!

At the children's playground I spied this masquerade;
Spider-like and yet a trampoline.
And I wondered what the children thought when they scrambled up on it;
Surely the strangest insect ever seen.
Did they see a giant spider, and clamber on its web?
Did they bounce on it to show their lack of fear?
Did they giggle with excitement at their game of 'let's-pretend'
As they waited for the Spider to appear?
We can never think as children think; those thoughts are truly gone,
And we cannot quite remember what we thought.
Imagining was part of it, of that we may be sure
But our memories are of an adult sort.
It could be that the children don't think very much at all
As they gambol in this pleasant parkland scene.
Maybe little Johnny just looks at it and says
'I think I'll bounce on that old trampoline!'

Soak Joke!

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/2010/01/shadow-shot-sunday-89.html
SOAK JOKE!

Look at the shadow (well, it's a meme)
Then consider the photo's theme.
Naughty grandson, cheeky grin!
He's by the lake and he's just been in.
He's wearing his towel, a sort of cape.
We all said 'No!' but he made his escape!
Into the water, retrieving the ball,
Laughing at us, ignoring us all!
The towel is soaking, likewise the hat.......
But you have to forgive a grin like that!

Diagonal Delight

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY

DIAGONAL DELIGHT

Christmastime has come and gone with all the celebration.
 Now's the time for a little boy to enjoy some relaxation.
Gone are the days of dreaming and the wild anticipation.
A cubby-house is quite a simple sort of  re-creation,
But it can be the stage for any sort of situation.
*
What's the best thing in the world? Why! Imagination!

Softening the Blow!

SOFTENING THE BLOW!

Hardly a work of art!
In a corner set apart.
Towels airing in the sun;
Just a chore and not much fun.
But, for softening the blow,
There's sun to shine and shade to throw.
Domestically, I am a slattern.
But I do respond to a pretty pattern!
*
By the way, the one that's grey
Is really meant to look that way!

Casting a Shadow

A contribution to SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY.
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/2009/04/shadow-shot-sunday-46.html

Note! If he fell he'd land on a gentle grassy slope!

CASTING A SHADOW.

And is it so very long ago
Grandad and I walked along just so?
Was I the one so near the sky
Shouting out 'I high! I high!'
And did I feel so great and grand
Yet still in need of a helping hand?
And will that little hand, one day,
Help his grandson along the way?
And will his shadow walk behind
Bringing the shadowy past to mind?
And when, in time, we all are gone,
Will our shadows walk on and on...........................?

The Listener

A contribution to SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY.
http://heyharriet.blogspot.com/2009/04/shadow-shot-sunday-46.html

THE LISTENER

We sat down in a shadowy spot and had a little chat.
We talked of this and the other, we even talked of that.
We drank our cups of coffee and we put the world to rights.
We spoke of married couples who are having awful fights;
We laughed about, well, you-know-who who wears such awful clothes.
We talked about a lot of things not everybody knows.
And, when she'd gone, I looked around and, as the picture's shown,
'Someone' had been listening! We hadn't been alone!

(Can't see the interloper? Well, let me quickly say,
A quick flick with a duster would have sent him on his way!)

The Invisible Tree.

This week's SHADOW SHOT

(Author on holiday and unable to respond to comments.)

THE INVISIBLE TREE.

I'm sure you can see
The invisible tree!
It's not there at all
If you look at the wall.
And yet, you will find
You can 'see' in your mind
The tree that's close by
Shutting-out summer sky!
A shadow that falls
On the windows and walls
Paints a picture, bright green
Of a tree that's not seen!

Lazy Ladder.

SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY comes around again.
Lake Macquarie is a well-known playground near my home in New South Wales. I invite you to climb the ladder and come  fishing!

LAZY LADDER

A guard-rail isn't very active,
Although it may look quite attractive.
But this one's busy, can't you see!
It's making a ladder to the sea!

Plus:Mystic Mosaic

For
SHADOW SHOT SUNDAY

MYSTIC MOSAIC.

Admiring a mosaic we all gathered round.
Then, purely accidentally, look at what we found!
A group of ghosts had gathered from some long-forgotten show,
Dreaming of their glory-days in pageants long ago.
Recalling the excitement of the cheering and the clapping;
Days when they were younger and their feet were busy tapping.
It's a rather charming whimsy but (you knew it all along!)
The shadow of the camera proves I've got it wrong!
