Brown Beauty

I have lived through a time of change.
But, even 'then' it seemed quite strange
That Whites, in South Africa, like me,
Looking down on Black society,
Should make it part of their life-style plan
To get a dark and glowing tan!
Brown skin is beautiful, and the answer
To getting sun-spots and skin cancer!
Not only that, but that brown glow
Doesn't let the age-spots show!
'White' skin doesn't pass the test!
I now affirm that
Brown is Best!

EEYORE!
(An Acrostic)

Every donkey that I've met
Ends up proving to be a pet!
Yes! Those lovely gentle eyes
Open wide and what a size!
Robin, (I mean the Christopher one,)
Enjoyed his Eeyore. Oh what fun!

Bending

BLUE MONDAY
 BENDING!

Albert Einstein said it, now others say it's true!
*
Here is our little planet! A bright little ball of blue.
It's floating in a universe which, seemingly, never ends,
But here's the really startling bit...... it's a universe which bends!
I find it hard to credit, and, for sure, the proofs seem few,
But people, cleverer than me, say that it is true!
However, they're not certain which way the bending goes.
There are several choices as the following image shows.

The opinions  at the moment seem to favour number one.
But no-one can really prove a thing when all is said and done!
Picture us in a large balloon, but one without an end...........
*
Sorry! Lesson over! I give-up, my friend!

LAVENDER
(An Acrostic)

Like a lake of lavender
All the way to the sky.
Vast, vast swathes of lavender
Each way one casts ones eye.
Near to us and far away
Delighting heart and mind!
Ecstasy ! For all our senses!
Rapture, florally designed.

Yellow Peril!

                                           Felice Varini

MELLOW YELLOW MONDAY
Cardiff! That's disgraceful! What a mess of paint!
It's enough to try the very patience of a saint.
To think that you'd allow your docks to be so desecrated!
Your authorities will find themselves thoroughly berated!
It's nothing but graffiti! It's a positive disgrace!
How can all those Welshmen stand to contemplate the place!
I'll walk around and look at all the smears and all the mess!
Though I'm sure that it will bring me the reverse of happiness.
*
But what is this? I've reached a point where every splash combines!
Where all the bits and pieces form concentric curving lines!
Where I can see three circles of ever-decreasing sizes!
Surely this must be the very greatest of surprises.
Only the spot I stand on affords this vantage-point!
In all other positions it's a mess and out of joint!
Perspective-changing art! A name I've never heard before!
But now I want to see some more...and more.... and more.... and more!
Cardiff! You were cleverer than I was at the start.
For you commissioned this entrancing form of modern art!

LOVE!
Isn't this the most romantic shot you've ever seen!
Far surpassing shots of bridal glory!
The honeymoon is over but romance has kept its sheen,
And, day by day, they're living a Love Story.
I saw them at the beach with their delightful little boy,
Who was dabbling in the water, unaware
That his parents were expressing a unique and charming joy;
The world was watching, but they didn't care.
True love does not depend upon 'the wedding' or 'the dress',
Or the photographs bedecked with silver hearts.
This photograph, to me, expresses special happiness,
It's how a romance grows, not how it starts.

Till the End of Time

TILL THE END OF TIME

'Does the road wind uphill all the way?'
The voice of the speaker is rasping;
'How long? How long?' he tries to say,
But his breaths are short and gasping.
*
'Yes, up-hill all the way to the skies,
For ever and ever as well.
Before you, see the mountain rise!
Sisyphus, you are in Hell!
The gods will not be derided!
You tricked us and that will not do!
Your punishment has been decided!
Every day you will suffer anew!
See this boulder, perched just a bit higher!
You must push it away as you climb!
If not, then your fate will be dire!
You must push till the ending of time!
*
'Does the road wind up-hill all the way?'
'Yes! And this is your Judgement Day!'

VIEW FROM EIGHTEEN
(Written at that age.)

I see the future as a time apart,
A little room
In which I am old,
And all else is old with me.
Yet there is a barrier
Between what is
And what is to come,
When I am old.
There is a door
Into that dusty, plush room.
Tomorrow will be the mirror
Of today.
Yet, inevitably,
I shall find the door
To the stale smell
And the moth-eaten rug.
Yesterday I stood amazed in the garden,
With the dragonflies and the fresh green grass.
When did I come into the house?
Two doors.
One leads back into the sunshine.
The other one leads to the darkened room.
And I cannot turn back.

Mid-day Shade

                                                Brenda Bryant: Queensland

MID-DAY SHADE

Beyond the forest lies the sun,
Blazing down like liquid fire,
And the grass is parched while the temperature
Climbs higher, ever higher.
But enter the great cathedral,
Be soothed by the arching trees.
Wander in the shade awhile
Enjoy the cooling breeze.
Rain-forests are so precious
And yet we still destroy them!
Let us preserve them while we may
So that we can still enjoy them

MIND LOCKING
(An Acrostic)

My mind requires a golden key
If I'd relive each memory.
Nothing remains of some past joys!
Deleted! How that fact annoys!
*
Lazy days on far-flung beaches
Orange-orchards, sun-warmed peaches,
Crazy exploits when a girl.
Kisses that put me in a whirl.
I half-remember, not too clearly;
Names have gone, or very nearly.
Give me that key and I'll recall, in detail, how I had a ball!

---------------------------------------------------------------

We went down to WoyWoy yesterday to see a Williamson play. 'Operator'. I found it slow to start with but the second act was intriguing and more lively.

While we were having lunch I looked out and saw the first touch of Spring! The wattle is in full bloom everywhere.

Keep Out!

Dudley N.S.W.

MY WORLD

KEEP OUT!

The sign above just seems to shout
'Private Property! Keep Out!'
Athough there are other ways to reach
The sea, the pools, the waves, the beach,
It still seems a little feudal;
We are mongrels to their poodle!
They will have no truck with us....
Folk who've come there on the bus!
Jesus once announced, I'm sure,
'They are always with us'; he meant The Poor.
And so it will be, I know, for ever;
Some will be stupid and some clever;
Some will be rich, some impecunious
(And the latter type is multitudinous!)
Communism hoped to be
A way to human equalty
But ask an impoverished Muscovite
If the system worked alright!
Some people will always have the lot;
The house built in the premier spot.
And they will always erect a sign
Saying 'Keep Out! What's mine is mine!
Thank goodness we're allowed to say
'I'll reach the beach by another way'.

DEBACLE!
The Saga of a Disappointing Excursion!

Our excursion;
A diversion.
Up at five,
Half alive.
'On your mark!'
In the dark.
Chilly breeze
Round the knees.
On the train.
What a pain.
Concert choice
Choral voice.
Straining throats,
Discord notes!
Not much heart
All too smart.
Off to cruise.
Awful news.
Not booked in!
Couldn't win!
Lunch in caff
Rather 'naff'.
Hours on train
Home again.
Straight to bed
Feeling dead.
Hear us say
'What a day!'

Lovely Lake!

Lake Eyre as it is 99 years out of 100

LOVELY LAKE!

Metamorphosis Australia! Lake Eyre is in flood again!
Thousands of miles away, last summer, way up North, they experienced rain.
And not just rain, but floods and deluges; the rivers swelled beyond their banks!
And many parched parts of the country greened again in fertile thanks.
Then slowly, slowly, month by month, the water reached down to Lake Eyre,
And scientists watched its progress with great interest from the air.
For Lake Eyre floods ONCE IN A HUNDRED YEARS! Read that twice! It's so amazing!
Where once just sand stretched far and wide, cattle could, by now, be grazing!
Germany, Italy and France could fit inside Lake Eyre with ease!
My mind boggles with the thought of raw statistics such as these!
But Lake Eyre is a place of myst'ry; humans have the gift of words,
But are they even half as clever as those 'silly birdbrained' birds!
For coastal birds by tens of thousands heard the silent clarion call
And now they splash in heavenly water, Lake Eyre water, wall-to-wall!
By what strange magic could they ever know that their's was a Paradise Found?
We communicate by science; they 'spoke' without a single sound!
Did the birds up North deduce it! When it rained say 'Here's the rain!'
Send a message to the coastal birds...... 'Lake Eyre will soon be full again!'
Life's a mystery we can't understand! Life is God, so I declare!
Metamorphosis! What a miracle! Let us give praise for Lake Eyre!
*
Lake Eyre as it is now!

The birds arrive!

France, Germany and Italy could fit inside this lake!

And a good time is being had by all!

HORSES' BIRTHDAY!

Happy Birthday to the Horses!
They have aged a year today!
Lovely creatures! Let's applaud them
As they gallop on their way!
