Perspective

SCENIC SUNDAY
http://scenicsunday.blogspot.com/

PERSPECTIVE

There is something about perspective that is very satisfying,
Something which seems, artistically, so right.
One's eye delights in tracing lines which, eventually, disappear,
Arrowing to nothing, out of sight.
I've heard talk of 'discovery'; how people, long ago,
Didn't understand perspective in the least!
But how could they not notice the diminishing of lines
And not appreciate this visual feast?
Brunelleschi and Alberti  first 'discovered' what is seen
Quite clearly by the un-artistic eye!
I can't believe that no-one else had noticed this before!
That something obvious just passed them by!
I'll never understand this fact, but here is my home town,
With beautiful perspective on display.
The Middle Ages may have been blindfolded for a while,
But perspective is a joy that's here to stay.

COMING INTO VIEW!

"There's a strange old lady over there
Taking photographs of us!
She really looks suspicious
But I don't want to make a fuss!
She was pointing in this direction
When we first set-foot her way!
As though she were waiting for figures
To add to her array!
Maybe somebody has told her
That figures add a dimension!
Maybe there isn't any need
For my feeling of apprehension.
It could be that she has a blog
And likes shots in monochrome.
Sorry! I'm still uneasy!
Turn round and we'll head for home!"

Dilapidated Dunny!

SCENIC SUNDAY
http://scenicsunday.blogspot.com/

DILAPIDATED DUNNY!

We drove to the orange orchard;
Fruit as far as the eye could see;
Gorgeous golden globes of it
Hanging from every tree.
And there, looking truly rural,
Was a dunny, in disrepair!
It's been many a decade
Since anyone was sitting there!
The corrugated iron was rusty,
There wasn't any door,
Weeds were growing profusely
All over the wooden floor.
But I thought it had a certain charm,
An Australian nonchalance;
It could become an icon,
If it were given half a chance!

PLEA!

Is anyone else having problems
Publishing illustrations?
My 'upload' thingy is very slow,
With lots of complications!
Hence this little poem
Which I publish unadorned!
The loss of my illustrations
Is well and truly mourned!
I hope to hear that others
Are all in the same boat!
Otherwise I may be forced,
To send 'Blogmail' a nasty note!

Contrast

SCENIC SUNDAY

CONTRAST

Inside the City Hall the evening is beginning.
Still there is daylight but the dusk will very soon be winning.
My eyes, accustomed to the dark, are startled by the sight
Of the Civic Park, across the way, still bathed in brilliant light.

LET-DOWN!

A man walked into a bar and saw an old friend sitting there.
He looked completely miserable, hopelessly full of care.
'Good gracious, Merv!' the friend declared, 'What's got you in this state?
You look as though somebody's died! Is that what it is, old mate?'
Merv answered 'Somebody died, alright, in March, my Uncle Clyde.
I inherited fifty thousand dollars from him when he upped and died.'
His friend replied 'That's rather sad, but the money must be great!'
Said Merv 'Well, then in April I lost my Auntie Kate.
I got a hundred thousand from her'. 'Good heavens!' said his friend,
'It's beyond belief! Do you mean to say your good fortune had no end!'
'When May came round Great Uncle Fred chose to turn-up his toes.
I only got sixty thousand there. Oh well, that's the way it goes.'
'You're a wealthy man!' his friend declared 'Why! You must feel like a king!'
Sighed Merv 'But June's almost over, and, so far, not a thing!'

Sure Signs

THAT'S MY WORLD

SCENIC SUNDAY

Spring blossoms at The Junction;
A very welcome sight.
Fulfilling a useful function;
Making the world more bright.

TWO CLOTHES FOR COMFORT!

I can nap in anything, Maxine!
And nothing too, if you know what mean!
After lunch I go all sort of limp
And lose the urge to titivate or primp.
The nearest couch just beckons and I flop;
No matter that I'm in my sequined top!
Creases? I say who cares about a crease?
All I ask is a little bit of peace.
But when it comes to comfort I insist
That comfortable shoes are on my list.
Should I attempt high heels I simply stagger;
Not for me the slinky walk or martial swagger!
I get a pained expression on my face
As I'm limping at an ever-slower pace.
Yes! Comfortable shoes are what I need.
A sure sign that I'm very old indeed!
But wait! There is that other irritation,
A quite unnecessary complication!
Those little tags and labels at the neck
Which make my skin an itchy scratchy wreck!
Labels never worried me before!
But now I find they make me really sore!
Ban them, I say! Our simply cut them out!
Surely they're something we could do without!
And so, Maxine, I have a carefree snooze.
Relaxing in 'no tags' and 'comfy shoes'!

Guardian Angel

SCENIC SUNDAY
http://scenicsunday.blogspot.com

GUARDIAN ANGEL

In holier days than these the City Fathers stated
The Cathedral should always tower over all.
Nothing should be higher or slightly dominating,
No theatre or block of flats or hall.
And, so far, we've been lucky; the Cathedral hovers over
All the happy godless people down below
And when it's lit at night
It makes a lovely sight.
Religion really does put on a show!

Picnic Perfection

SHADOW SHOT
http://heyharriet।blogspot.com/

PICNIC PERFECTION

A loaf of bread , a flask of wine;
Come share this country find of mine.
A picnic table tucked away,
Where eucalyptus branches sway,
And leafy shadows move and spread,
Echoing greenery overhead.
The curving path, gently inclined,
Leads to this spot, a magical find.
Here, you and I can reminisce,
Thankful life has come to this.

Busted!

SCENIC SUNDAY

BUSTED!

We were driving through the country-side
When 'Stop here!' everybody cried.
And that was when we parked beside
A London Bus!
*
Not bright and shiny, startling red,
But battered and pale green instead.
'Wish it could talk' somebody said;
'That London Bus.'
*
Did it once ply those London streets,
Passing Bobbies on their beats,
Carrying pimps and thieves and cheats,
That London Bus?
*
Then, did it grow a little old,
So it was left out in the cold,
And, finally, tragically, it was sold,
That London Bus?
*
Then, did a slouch-hat business-man,
Come with a quite convenient plan,
To lengthen the life with a further span
For that London Bus?
*
'I'll take it to old Sydney Town,
Where it can still run up and down!
Maybe I'll even paint it brown!
That London Bus!'
*
And did they put it on a ship,
For a very long and arduous trip,
With many a rise and deep-wave dip,
That London Bus?
*
Did it traverse another city
Where people thought it very pretty,
Though not bright red, and more's the pity,
That London Bus.
*
Then, I suppose, came Farmer Giles,
When it had driven a million miles;
'I'll take it on' he said with smiles;
That London Bus.
*
'What a good hen-house it will make!
Though the Australian sun will bake,
And it may meet the occasional snake!
That London Bus.
*
But soon there came insidious rust.
The Farmer stomped his foot and cussed.
'I'll let it rot, because I must,
That London Bus.'
*
That's how we saw it, high and dry,
Mocked by the people passing by,
What a slow old, terrible way to die
For a London Bus.
*
But sometimes I'm sure its windows gleam
When, in reverie it starts to dream
Of London streets where people teem,
That London Bus.

Morning Glory

It was on a trip to Indigo County on the NSW border that I shot this dream-like view.
It has to be a haiku.

MORNING GLORY.

The trees lie indigo-etched
Fading to lavender,
Mountains blush with morning light.

Dream-like and etched on my heart here:

Just a Creek

JUST A CREEK

When we speak of waterways,
We know that we are blessed
With ocean, river and the lake.
So who needs all the rest?
But here I show you Throsby Creek,
Just a little waterway
That ambles on towards the sea
And beautifies our day.
We wander, picnic, take our time
Any day of the week,
Enjoying the simple pleasures
That we find at Throsby Creek.

Minerva's Garden

We have friends who have created a delightful Bed and Breakfast in the wooded area at the rear of their house. It looks out across the expanse of Fegan's Bay, which is part of Brisbane Water (nothing to do with Brisbane except that it was named after the same man.) They found a statue of Minerva in the garden when they bought the property, hence the name.

MINERVA'S GARDEN.

What a charming spot to come,
Far away from the city's hum!
Minerva's Garden is the place
To just relax and lose all trace
Of worldy care and stress and strain,
And push and pull and greed and gain.
A Bed and Breakfast destination
Designed for pure felicitation.
Wake to the sound of birds around you!
Maybe a cockatoo has found you!
Gaze out upon a brand new day
With all the delights of Fegan's Bay.
Wander down and what do you know!
Breakfast on the patio!
So much old-world charm is there;
Rock awhile in the rocking chair.
Now's the time you must depart.
But 'Minerva' will linger in your heart.

Flushed with Success

SCENIC SUNDAY
comes round again.
Lake Mulwala is a man-made lake near Yarrawonga where we have just holidayed. To make the lake, a large number of trees had to be submerged. It looks quite forbidding during the day but it is transformed at dusk. It is also full of fish so it is a great tourist attraction to fishermen.

FLUSHED WITH SUCCESS!

Lake Mulwala. At first it seems
Unreal, like something in our dreams.
Or, maybe, nightmares, for they've died.....
The trees by which the boats must glide.
Those trees so still, so dark, so gaunt,
Almost seem to loom and haunt.
They died by drowning, every one,
And now they face the blazing sun,
Without the benefit of leaves.
Each one a phantom that still grieves;
Grieves for the days that used to be
When each one was a living tree.
*
But evening comes! What transformation!
A victory for re-creation!
The flush of pink lights lake and sky.
The cockatoos come flying by
And perch for safety on each tree.
How restful the long night will be.
No predator can reach them here!
And a thousand other birds appear.
The trees' reflections dance awhile
And a pale moon; rising, seems to smile.
Then we realise we can see
How living a dead tree can be.

Disappearing Act

My contribution to SCENIC SUNDAY this week.
scenicsunday.blogspot.com

We lived near Cape Town for eight years, and we returned for a holiday two years ago. The Cape is very beautiful, but, like all mountainous country, mists are liable to swirl in at any time to obscure the view. I saw this sea-mist rushing in and I was just able to photograph Lion's Head before it disappeared completely!

DISAPPEARING ACT.
The rock is rooted in the earth;
The mist is from aloft.
One is the ultimate hardness;
One the ultimate soft.
Together they bring us beauty,
As they stand, combine or drift.
The Cape! Such scenes of splendour!
They give our hearts a lift.

You may enjoy some of my other SCENIC SUNDAY efforts.

Romantic Beach

Not a photograph of my own for SCENIC SUNDAY. But it's a Family Foto!
Greg and Michelle had reached a stage when they wanted to be married.
But NOT overwhelmed by marriage plans, bullied, cajoled and harried!
So off they went to do the deed on the island of Fiji
Where they stayed in a luxury cottage with their own beach, by the sea.
My son took this peaceful photograph of their Island Paradise.
They were married right there on the beach.
With nobody throwing rice!
