The Four Sisters

THREE WORD WEDNESDAY
http://www.threewordwednesday.com
supplied the words in blue.

THE FOUR SISTERS

'How stoical!' my companion said
As we stood beside the grave,
'How filial and how honourable;
How noble and how brave!'
The sisters, Maude and Verity,
Agnes and Veronique,
Had nursed their father for fifteen years,
When he was frail and weak.
He was an evil-tempered man;
Watching them like a hawk;
Telling them what to eat and drink,
Telling them how to talk.
They stood, the picture of misery,
Beside the shallow grave,
And many a fellow mourner
Echoed the words 'How brave!'
Maude had spoken in the church,
As though their father were a king.
Was I the only person there
Who heard a voice with a hollow ring?
Of course, as an apothecary,
Things were plain as they could be;
After all, Miss Agnes
Had bought the poison from me.
She's a handsome woman, Miss Agnes,
And now she's rich as well.
It's lucky that I know secrets
 That I shall never tell.
Tomorrow I'll court Miss Agnes;
How happy we will be!
But I'll be keeping the poisons
Under lock and key!

INDIGENOUS ART

Value...... a variable word.
For decades Aboriginal art was valueless.
It was stumbled across by intrepid travellers
Who deemed it worthless,
Childlike,
Dauby
And inconsequential.
Then it was discovered!
*
Now it fetches millions
In trumped-up Art Galleries worldwide!
It is copied.
But no forger can ever imbue the art
With stories,
Family references,
A feeling of 'place'.
No copy 'sings'.
*
It belongs to the Aborigines.
I hope

Fun and Games

FUN AND GAMES

I sit up in my citadel,
And look down with disdain.
I send you wind when you want calm,
And heat when you want rain.
I play my games with the lot of you;
I raise your expectations,
And then I fill your silly lives
With awkward situations.
You are the pieces on the board
Of my great game of chess;
You are but pawns, for all your pleas
For wisdom or success.
*
For some time now I have been bored
With my repetitious games;
Tired of seeing simple floods
And forests burnt by flames.
'Ho hum' I say 'Another drought,
Another storm of ice'.
I ponder long to bring to mind
Some novelty device.
So now, the best game ever!
This one is really rich!
When you wake up tomorrow
You'll find I've made a switch!
*
I've decided to swap them over...
The sky and the rolling sea!
Tomorrow morning both will be
 Where the other used to be!
When you look up an ocean
Will be rolling over your head.
When you look where the sea was
There will be space instead!
Oh what a great calamity
I am about to present!
You'll, loudly, beg me to change my mind
But I will not relent.
*
Why should I listen to your cries,
When all is said and done?
You are only flesh and blood
And I'm having too much fun.

WELCOME WATER 2010

A glorious wet winter
Put an end to 'endless' drought;
After ten years of dry weather.
Rain was welcome without doubt.
Lake Ayre is full of birdsong,
Where once was only sand,
And colourful desert blossoms
Embroider all the land.
Here, in our coastal city,
We're rarely short of rain,
But even we were happy
When La Nina came again.
El Nino is the Christ Child
Who brings drought at Christmas Time;
La Nina is the girl child
And her rains are quite sublime.
When we are dry South America
Rejoices in the rain;
When we are wet South America
Feels dry weather pain.
It's all to do with the ocean,
Or that's what I've been told;
Sometimes it is warmer,
And sometimes it is cold.
Whatever may be the reason,
These children don't much care
What magic brought the rain to us!
So long as they get their share!

PONDER

No quick decision.
No leap into the unknown.
Ponder for a while.

PHANTOM!

Do folk still scare themselves to death,
Going rigid, holding breath,
When someone dresses all in white
Intent on scaring in the night?
'Wearing a sheet' was the thing to do,
Plus groaning or whispering 'Whoo-hoo!',
When I was young, with no T.V.
Or movies to ape reality.
But now our screens are full of creatures
With fiery fangs and ghastly features.
Grotesque eyes and out-sized noses,
Lolling tongues and  threatening poses!
Every film tries to out-do
The others in its gore and goo!
A modern child would likely boast
'You're just a person, not a ghost!'
Horror once was meek and mild,
Suiting the palate of a child.
Do modern 'beasts' invade the dreams
Of children, now, with shrieks and screams?
Give me the ancient bed-sheet game.
Digital 'ghosts' are not the same.

Slimming

SLIMMING SENSATION!

At first I thought 'it' was Barbie!
But no, she's really real!
She's a human-being
Who can laugh and sing and feel!
All of us know the sensation
When a waist-band's a bit too tight;
We enjoy the release from 'bondage'
When we go to bed at night.
Imagine how this lady
Feels when she swallows a pea!
It must feel like a boulder;
A real monstrosity.
Her innards must be squashed-up
Like sardines in a tin.
Supposing she feels like some pudding!
How will she get it in?
This is my idea of ridiculous.
Whatever will she do
If, one day, she bends down quickly
And simply snaps in two?

SPRING MARKET

Spring, the sweet Spring
Is the year's pleasant king'!
Oh dear! Somebody said that before!
Oh well, he was right!'
When it's sunny and bright
The phrase has a definite ring!
*
Say, what's the best fun? It's
Pursuing the punnets
To make sure that the garden's ablaze!
Be sure you can collar
Some blooms for a dollar
And prepare for some colourful days.

Alone

RUBY TUESDAY

ALONE

Sometimes it's good to be alone
To think of happiness you've known.
To live again the days gone past,
Wishing they had not gone so fast.
Not to lose oneself in sorrow,
Nor to rail against the morrow,
But to give thanks for well-lived days,
And simply to stand awhile and gaze.

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND

I am a feminist through and through but I'm hopelessly impractical
So how do I accomplish things? Well it's often problematical.
First catch the husband off his guard, admitting work is needed,
Then pounce, suggesting time and place, to ensure your words are heeded.
The conversations go like this......' That bush is in the wrong place.'
'I'll move it sometime' (that is him, with a bored look on his face.)
Three days later 'I thought you said that bush should be over there?'
His response....'Did I say that?' Mine.....'Yes, I was there.'
Several days later I remark 'What a lovely sunny day!
The perfect day to move that bush!' (See how I get my way!)
'I don't think it needs moving!' Is this a rear-guard action?
'You said it did!' Oh dearie me! He's making a retraction!
'Oh for goodness sake!' He's rather peeved, but picking up a spade!
The bush is moved! The deed is done! The situation's saved!.
But look at the yellow island to see what happens next!
No wonder the poor old husband is looking a little vexed!

You Don't Know Me But.....

The Wordle

THE SUNDAY WHIRL
asks us to use the words in the Wordle

YOU DON'T KNOW ME BUT........

You don't know me but I know you.
I am keeping you in view.
My planet once was just like yours;
Beautiful but, oh the flaws!
Once it twirled in space on high
'Like a diamond in the sky'.
Like yours it was a spark in time,
Fleeting but, we thought, sublime.
With mindless smiles we thoughtlessly
Enjoyed its trees, its shining sea.
Then as time was growing older,
Our concerns began to smoulder;
Would we be drowned or trapped in ice?
Well, we discussed it once or twice.
But silence finally held sway;
Oblivious we sailed on our way.
When the ruin finally came
And we had lost the planet game
We had to take to metal ships
Which set off on eternal trips.
Scattered, we're zooming here and there,
Through a universe that's blank and bare.
Your Earth has just come into view.
You don't know me but I know you.

A Simple Alphabet
LAKE

There was a young fellow called Jake
Who went for a row on a lake;
He stood up and he clowned
And fell in and drowned.
So that was an awful mistake!

UFO?

BLUE MONDAY

UFO?

Gazing up from down below,
Do we see a UFO?
Has it come from Outer Space
To look-in-on the human race.
From this orb, so bright and shiny
Will there soon come very tiny
Little green men with enormous eyes
Who'll look at us with great surprise?
Will they sing a Martian song
And tell us where we're going wrong?
Will they be firm, though quite benign,
And set-about pulling us into line?
Will they tell us that up on Mars,
They don't use guzzling motor-cars?
Will they say our little sphere
As far too full of war and fear?
Will their visit put us right
And will our future days be bright?
*
No, we can't escape our trouble,
For this is just a floating bubble.

Japanese Garden Gosford NSW

RE-CREATION

When one thinks of Australia, babbling brooks don't come to mind;
That's not to say they don't exist but they're rather hard to find.
And the waterfalls are often dry; one couldn't say they gush!
The water doesn't surge a lot, or splash down in a rush.
This is the dryest continent on earth, so we are told.
Even on our lush East Coast, water is like gold.
So for pleasant falls of water we must thank the Japanese
Who build us lovely gardens, using their expertise.
Many towns have a Japanese Garden; many gardens have waterfalls.
A lovely change from the buildings and the busy shopping malls.
