FIRE

The friend and the foe
Warmth, sparkle and energy
You are danger too

THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE

The sounds of silence! A misnomer,
Unless, of course, you're in a coma.
Listen! Hear your blood go round
With that familiar swishing sound.
Listen! Hear breaths out, breaths in,
Hear them pause, hear them begin.
Listen! Hear that chirping bird.
Silence? Utterly absurd.
The traffic's hum, though far away,
Forms a background to each day.
And is that tinnitus in my ears,
Forerunner of silent future years?
Deafness! A silence that exists,
Silence that, for years, persists.
If I'm heading in that direction
It is cause for introspection.
Give me years of cacophony
So it can be a memory.

Rearrangement

REARRANGEMENT

From day to day we look the same;
No sign of age approaching,
And yet, in a nasty sneaky way,
The signs are fast encroaching.
No creams or potions, needles, knives
Can stop the steady changing,
The way in which our once-young face
Is, oddly, rearranging.
We show someone a photograph ,
Taken in years gone by
And the friend says 'Gosh! Is that really you?'
And we're left to wonder why!

TRUANTS
(A poem for Children)

'It's Rick and Ruby, Teacher!
Look! They're late again!
I bet they've been playing truant
Down in Raspberry Lane!'
*
The goody-goody children,
Were happy to declare
That, when the work had been given out,
The two had not been there!
The Teacher spoke quite sternly;
'For a punishment' she declared,
'You must say what you've done this-morning,
Your adventure must be shared.'
*
Said Rick 'We saw a lizard,
Hiding underneath a stone!
And then we saw some fallen leaves
That the wind had blown.
We blew a dandelion clock,
And climbed a little tree,
And then we watched the antics
Of a furry bumble-bee.'
Then Ruby, who was younger,
Said 'I watched the clouds float by;
I lay in the long grass on my back
And looked up at the sky.
We saw the farmer ploughing
In the meadow by the stream,
We looked at little fishes
And saw their bright scales gleam.'
*
Said the Teacher 'Enough of punishment!
Enough of all this talk!
Stop what you're doing, children!
We're going for a walk!'

The Smile Fruit

RUBY TUESDAY

THE SMILE FRUIT

Water-melon, with your smile,
How you tempt us and beguile!
Ruby-red with a touch of pink;
Into which our teeth we sink.
Juice on juice comes dripping down!
How can anybody frown?
When we feel the pangs of thirst
You're the fruit we think of first.
Water-melon, with your smile,
How you tempt us and beguile!

JANE EYRE?

Is this Jane Eyre? No, surely not!
Red lips and finger-nails?
And the rose is red and passionate,
With all that that entails!
The Jane Eyre of my youthful days
Was grey, a little mouse,
Who crept around, unnoticed,
In the corners of the house.
Did she harbour thoughts of passion?
Quite certainly, it seems,
And Mr Rochester's virility
Inhabited her dreams.
But this was a tale of repression,
Of unrequited love.
Red finger-nails and pouting lips!
What are they thinking of?
No, here is my little heroine,
Just as she ought to be,
Suffering pangs of love, alone,
A picture of modesty!

Loch Lomondish

LOCH LOMONDISH
(You know the tune!)

Ye'll tak the high road
And I'll tak the low road,
And we'll be divorced by the morning.
I'm off to my true love;
I can't wait to be free.
Just remember, I gave you due warning!

Your cars on the bridge now
And speeding away now
A bright day of freedom is dawning.
For I've found a new love
Who's going to cherish me.
Just remember, I gave you due warning!

AFFLICTED!

'I've had a terrible time!' said Ben,
(He was looking rather queasy!)
'Now I know why adults say
'Life wasn't meant to be easy!'
He looked pathetic, down-in-the-mouth,
And really quite dejected.
When I asked him' What's the matter, old chap?'
His reply was not expected.
'First it was Tonsillitis,
Then Asthma was the next,
By the time I got  Kyphosis
I was really really vexed!
Then what should arrive but Psoriasis!
Then Glaucoma reared its head!
Hypothermia really
Made me wish that I were dead!'
'My poor old chap!' I said then.
'Your life has been so tough
It's easy to see that you're feeling
That you have had enough!
What is your doctor suggesting?
Surely you need bed-rest!'
Said Ben 'And how will a doctor help me
Get through a Spelling Test?'

Waiting For Me

POETIC BLOOMINGS
http://poeticbloomings.com/
asks for something about 'Home'

WAITING FOR ME!

I'd lived in many houses, and some had been O.K.
But none of them had affected me in quite that sort of way.
The Real Estate Agent was following and chatting with my son
And he turned to him and whispered 'I'm sure she'll like this one!'
This house cried out 'Welcome!' as soon as we stepped inside!
And I knew I had to have it; I would not be denied!
It's only an urban town-house, squeezed between two more,
With a pocket-handkerchief garden and a little blue front door.
But it has so many features that really caught my eye.......
Two bedrooms both with balconies; we can gaze down from on high;
Four bedrooms in all, one a study, the other one is a spare,
With a bathroom and walk-in wardrobe, for those who may sleep in there.
And under the stairs there's a cupboard, a large one that holds a lot;
And that is really vital considering the junk we've got.
We can walk to the shops and the buses, and, best of all, to the sea
And both our lovely children are in close proximity.
My very, very good fortune is sometimes hard to believe.
The only fly in the ointment........one day we'll have to leave!

The view right. Gum trees, of course.
The view left. A sports field; Rugby Football on Saturdays in winter.
The tiny 'garden', cut-back for winter.

In the Harem

"Women are in league with each other, a secret conspiracy of hearts and pheromones. "
~Camille Paglia

THE SECRET CONSPIRACY
Women are in league with each other; sisters in a world-wide club;
Unlike men who only bond with brothers when they meet them at the pub.
Women may fight and bicker; they often have a really vicious streak;
But one woman understands another; there is no need to speak.
Little girls have 'best friends' when they're children; friendship matters then.
But then comes all the sex-and-babies business and they merge with the world of men.
But soon they reach old age, 'the sunny uplands',  and, once more, they realise
That their 'girl-friends' are what makes the world keep turning; to have friends is to win the prize.
These ladies in the harem are all bonding, though they're not swapping recipes!
Throughout history we woman have been 'in league', and oh what a boon that is!

Sunny Sips

MELLOW YELLOW MONDAY

SUNNY SIPS

Hear them tinkle in your glass
When you need a drink.
Ice-blocks? Boring
When you're pouring!
You need a sunny clink.

How happily the moments pass
As you drink your fill!
Neat devices!
Lemon slices!
Much too good to spill!

ANKLE BITERS!
(An Acrostic)

Aren't other peoples' children ghastly!
Naughty and irritating....vastly!
Kids are always pushing, pouting,
Letting rip with shrieks and shouting!
Every child I've ever met
*
Behaved with lack of etiquette!
Isn't every child a pest?
Toddlers! I am not impressed.
Easy-going folk like me
Really should be children-free!
Slap them! Muzzle them! Bite their ankles!
They exist! A thought that rankles!

Aubade

PUT WORDS TOGETHER
asks for an aubade

An aubade is a morning love-song, just as a serenade is a love-song for evening.
I have tried romance from the male point of view!

AUBADE
(An acrostic)

As the brilliance of the morning drifts across your sleeping face,
Unique feelings, without warning, make me yearn for your embrace.
Beauty sleeps, and sleeping beauty hides within your tight-closed eyes,
And the world will swim in sunshine when they widen in surprise.
Daylight saddens and distresses; soon we part and parting's pain,
Evening, with its joyous rapture will close those eyes, in love, again.

We were asked to use the words from this song quote
"What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home "

IN CHARGE OF THE GLITCH!

If ever I think of God, and that is rarely,
I certainly do not picture him on the bus!
I still have that throne-in-heaven picture of him,
A Being the very opposite of us!
A slob, maybe, because he is unshaven,
But not some mortal trying to make his way;
The idea of Him sort of floating 'up there somewhere'
Is from childhood, but it lingers to this day.
If I were a small child these days I would see Him
A stranger with a computer in the clouds,
Clicking away, with pleasure, as we all do,
And quite removed from bustling human crowds.
Just like one of us he's tapping at his keyboard,
Uploading and downloading day and night,
Deleting people left and right and centre,
Deciding what is wrong and what is right.
And if He is fumble-fisted as he's tapping
The whole darned system ends up on the blink;
I often think He isn't even trying.......
Look at His world! We don't know what to think!
No! God on his way home on 'Number Forty'
Just doesn't even strike the slightest chord,
(As to 'was one' ........ well that's simply not good grammar!)
All in all, I am completely under-awed.
