BUSHFIRE
2009
So it finally ended.
The blitzcrieg of blistering blazing.
The tsunami of hellfire heat.
The charred cars are cool,
The millions of burnt animals
Are disappearing into the undergrowth.
The survivors are squaring their shoulders.
And the dead are being remembered.
Rain falls.
And look!
Already the miracle is happening!
Here and there an impudent green shoot
Sprouting from charred wood!
Nature
Squares its shoulders too.
In two years time
The grief
Will be green.

Ain't Nature great?! As well as poem...
That says it so eloquently Brenda.
Shades of Phoenix? Well rimed and so on target!
I remember the tsunami in our Country. So well said"... In two years time, The grief, Will be green... - Nature applies the medicine called 'time' to heal.
What promise.
OK, I am laughing myself silly here, because the captcha code for this comment is this:

too funny.
I LOVE this poem, and most especially "in two years time, the grief will be green". Wonderful and hopeful - and true. SO well done!
This is brilliant!
I love how you captured the shock and intensity in the first half of the poem and then in the middle you showed the sense of coming to terms with it. Then you showed the resurrection that nature brings forth and
"In two years time
The grief
Will be green."
Is such a perfect ending.
I always like your poems but this one really captured me, I thought it was so well done! :-)
'In two years time
The grief
Will be green.'
I love those lines, Brenda.
You have described a bushfire as only one who has seen it first hand. The worst image for me always is the charred remains of animals who could not out-run the blaze...
i hate when my comments sound like a cliche - because people have already captured in their comments the beauty of your writing :). your poem is exquisite, both due to the merciless description in the first part, and to the hope rising from the second. the line "The blitzcrieg of blistering blazing." is very expressive. but just like all the others said, the last lines
"The grief
Will be green"
are the candy on the cake!
Love this, it is full promise.
Pamela
I love the ending "grief will be green"
Nicely Done~
