Under His Hat

ONE STOP POETRY

Topic
'Through the Eyes of a Child'.

UNDER HIS HAT

We will never know
What is going on
Under his hat.
And he will not remember.
*
He slashes at the sand
With his stick.
*
Is he angry,
Yet still unused to the sensation?
Has someone said
'Time to go home!'
And he cannot explain
Why he suddenly feels
In a turmoil,
Frustrated, seething, ready to cry?
Slash! Slash!
*
Is he imagining a scene?
Is there a great dinosaur
Writhing in front of him?
Is the boy all-powerful, majestic and in control?
Slash! Slash!
*
Or does he just like the sound?
Slash! Slash!
*
We will never know.
And he will not remember.
*
But a lot is going on
Under his hat.

CEREMONIAL

I am intrigued by the start of things;
What lies at the very heart of things.
For ceremonials seem to be set
Firmly in amber and yet.... and yet....
'It's always been done this way' they say.
But 'always' had its own natal day.
Someone, once, said 'Let's all kneel!'
Or 'I vote we hear the church-bells peal!'
Or 'How about if we shout Hip Hip!'
Or 'Lets walk in a circle and then dip!'
'I know!' another would say 'Then I'm
Going to say a really important rhyme!'
'Let's all throw our hats in the air!'
Another will say ' And tear our hair!'
Ideas must have surfaced one by one;
They probably had a lot of fun!
I bet they quarreled and disagreed
Over timing, wording, dance and deed!
Finally, feeling most frustrated
Someone must have stood up and stated
'The king's crowned tomorrow! It's up to me
To create something called a cer-e-mon-y.
Understand! We're on a mission,
Creating something they'll call TRADITION!
In hundreds of years I can hear them say
'Of course, it's always been done this way.'

"Under His Hat" - Thanks for this familiar-yet-fresh (by grace of whimsical cinematic tightly-structured writing). . . reminded me of my stepson when he was younger, for the brief time I got to be his stepdad.

Excellent work.

really love this - have three children myself and was often wondering what was going on under their hats...

What a fun way to reflect on the mysteries inside a child's head. With three kids of my own (all past this stage, all still unknowable), I can relate to the wonder expressed here.

I invite you to come over and read my poem and let me know what you think: The Sleeping Bench

I just love "Under the Hat"! It is so true about the complex thoughts going on. You do a great job of capturing several possibilities.

Great topic. So many little boys love hats, sometimes won't take them off and then they grow up and don't even own one. I love a man in a hat. I'd like to say of my man..I wonder what's going on under your hat..maybe a tango? Very clever and insightful work. Thanks for posting. Gay (@beachanny)

How wonderful the minds of children, such fertile ground where little seeds grow to full-blown thoughts and ideas, where imagination builds worlds more real than any that can be seen. He may be a knight slaying the dragon, or just a little boy expressing his frustration at Mommy's call.
