The Colonnade of Time

THE COLONNADE OF TIME

We move along a colonnade.
Sometimes we are in shadow.
Sometimes the full sun
Blazes on us
And illuminates our path.
*
We look out between the columns
To see others perambulating.
Some may run, some may dawdle,
Some may falter and
Some may fall.
*
We wave to them
But we can never know them
Because we do not really
Know ourselves.
*
We look back and see ourselves
Pint-sized,
Starting out.
*
We look forward and see.....
But we cannot see.
*
There is a vague outline
Of what is to come;
A misty semblance
Of the colonnade's ending.
Is that a rock-face
Or is it a shining cloud
Beyond?
*
This is where we stand on the colonnade......
Here,
Now......
Let us stand and admire.....
But we have already moved on.
*
Other shadows,
Other flashes of glory
Await us.
Off we go!
*

I love that and the picture is great too.

"Misty semblance" has a lovely ring to it.

Beautiful photograph and words.

The picture is great, but your thoughtful and insightful poem is better. Rather haunting.
