Time and Place

GRANDMA'S GOULASH
asks for a very short story

TIME AND PLACE

I chose the time, and the place;
Romance was in the air.
I had a favourite look-out
And I thought I'd take her there.
I brought her to the highest point
Although she did complain
That it was very windy,
And, I agreed, it looked like rain.
She fell and hurt her knee.....
It was only a graze.
We couldn't see the view
Because of the misty haze.
She wasn't very well equipped
And a heel came off her shoe!
And she said I didn't help her up......
Well, I suppose that's true!
And then, oh dear, down came the rain!
She was only slightly wet.
And I wanted this to be a date
That we would not forget!
I chose the time, and the place
I visualised it all.
Now I'm having second thoughts....

I wont propose at all!

THE BLUE TRAIN

A million years ago
I travelled on the Blue Train.
Fresh from London,
I had arrived in the sparkle of South Africa.
Rhodesia, as it then was,
Beckoned.
We went to the station immediately;
I have forgotten it.
We boarded the train
And sped North;
I have forgotten most of it.
After all
Fifty years is a long time.
But I remember the border.
Because the staff changed
From South African
To Rhodesian.
Who could forget the
Dazzling white uniforms,
The dazzling white teeth,
The smiling generosity of spirit,
The good humour,
The efficiency?
I knew Rhodesia would be heaven.
And I was right.
*
But that was then.

The Tower Of Babel

SATURDAY CENTUS
http://jennymatlock.blogspot.com.au/
asks us to consider the term 'Blah, blah, blah.'

One hundred words plus the the prompt

THE TOWER OF BABEL

We live in the Tower of Babel.
Blah, blah, blah!
Pity that we're not able
To get out of where we are.
We hear the voices around us,
The noise is loud and dense.
But if we don't speak the language,
Nothing makes any sense!
If we all spoke the same language
We could understand
How other people are feeling
And we could walk hand in hand.
Subtitles try to help us
But they are not enough;
Translations give an idea
But the idea's often rough.
A universal language
Would surely make not mar
Human understanding
And get rid of blah, blah blah.

The Glass Mountains of Australia

GLASS

People who live in Glass Houses should never, no, never throw stones.
And people who climb Glass Mountains should be wary of breaking bones!
People who live in Glass Houses  should always wear plenty of clothes.
And people who climb Glass Mountains dare not strike a nonchalant  pose.
For Glass Houses are very revealing; friends may stand outside and stare.
And Glass Mountains are very slippery; one always has to take care.
Risk such a House or a Mountain and you lay yourself open to farce.
Avoid, if you can, an involvement with either one labelled 'Glass'.

Fair Exchange

FAIR EXCHANGE

It was hard to leave the Cape with its soaring mountain tops,
Those towering over Cape Town, the peaks, the dizzying drops;
And the Hottentots Holland Mountains, rising beyond the trees
In Somerset West, our 'hometown'; which had views very much like these.
South Africa had beaches and beautiful vineyards too,
And a quite delicious climate, so the sky was often blue.
*

But
It was good to arrive in New South Wales to find Lake Macquarie there!
No high mountains, but such beauty that I didn't really care!
The lakes are broad and tranquil, we wander round the shore,
Never thinking of the mountain peaks we loved so much before.
Australia has beaches and beautiful vineyards too,
And a quite delicious climate, so the sky is often blue.
*
'As one door closes.....' the saying goes. We have found it to be so.
There's beauty in this lovely world wherever one may go.

RAIN SONGS
The song of the rain in Autumn
Is the sound of the falling leaves
And the small birds that shelter
Underneath the  eaves.
The song of the rain in Winter
Is the sound of the distant snow
As the chill from the icy mountains
Reaches us  below.
The song of the rain in Springtime
Is a bright and happy tune
The city grows ever greener
On a rainy afternoon.
But the song of the rain in Summer
Is the loveliest song of all
As we lift up our hot, dry faces
And let blessings fall.
