Haphazard

Merewether Baths

HAPHAZARD

You'll have heard of the Devil's Marbles, if you come from around this way,
Though you probably haven't seen them for they lie so far away.
Deep in the deepest desert where there's little else but sand,
These enormous formations dominate the land.
Europeans call them Marbles; but ancient mythology
Has another explanation for the great rocks' history.
This says that the Rainbow Serpent laid its eggs on the desert ground,
And for sure, little 'eggs' just like them lie scattered all around.
Scientists say that erosion over millions and millions of years
Has caused the unlikely feature and the way that it appears.
Whatever the cause or reason our local planners thought
That our lovely local swimming-pool needed something of the sort.
They wanted a sort of barrier to stop the traffic flow
And a group of 'Devil's Marbles' seemed exactly the way to go!
Now why they lie haphazard and not in a neat straight line
Is something that's a mystery, not easy to define!
They're a rather quirky feature that we usually ignore.
If they suddenly started hatching-out, what would be in store!
