Morning Glory

                                                    Brenda Bryant

MONOCHROME WEEKEND
MORNING GLORY

The flood comes up from the river.
The flood of clear light.
The flood that will engulf us in sunshine

THE COLONNADE OF TIME

We move along a colonnade.
Sometimes we are in shadow.
Sometimes the full sun
Blazes on us
And illuminates our path.
*
We look out between the columns
To see others perambulating.
Some may run, some may dawdle,
Some may falter and
Some may fall.
*
We wave to them
But we can never know them
Because we do not really
Know ourselves.
*
We look back and see ourselves
Pint-sized,
Starting out.
*
We look forward and see.....
But we cannot see.
*
There is a vague outline
Of what is to come;
A misty semblance
Of the colonnade's ending.
Is that a rock-face
Or is it a shining cloud
Beyond?
*
This is where we stand on the colonnade......
Here,
Now......
Let us stand and admire.....
But we have already moved on.
*
Other shadows,
Other flashes of glory
Await us.
Off we go!

Angles

MONOCHROME WEEKEND

ANGLES

A relic of an earlier age, destined to be repaired,
Destined to have its old and dusty corners swept and aired.
The ladder's at the ready, to seek out ancient flaws,
Little cracks in plaster and unwelcome gaps in doors.
Once it held a family, back in Victorian days,
When things were very different in so many funny ways.
There is even a room for a servant! What shall we do with that?
The room isn't even big enough for us to swing a cat!
We'll sell it to a smart young thing who'll make it up-to-date
With walls all painted white and bright and a trendy iron gate!
But let's just pause a moment to view its bits and pieces,
Before it's brand new life begins, and, sadly, the old one ceases.

Suddenly, Silence

  Brenda Bryant

MONOCHROME

SUDDENLY, SILENCE

The cacophony of the busy street.
The blare of the traffic.
A glance to the left. Suddenly, silence.

The Great World

THE GREAT WORLD

Great big buildings! Grown-up toys!
Quite a thrill for little boys!
Mummy and Dad went to HongKong
And they took Harry and Max along.
Will they remember the thrill of it all,
When buildings shrink and they are tall?
