Banksia Man

MY WORLD

BANKSIA MAN

Joseph Banks
*
When Captain Cook came to Australia
Joseph Banks came too.
He was a famous botanist;
Many plants that he found were new.
The one above is the Banksia,
To which he gave his name.
For his work he was knighted,
Enjoying years of fame.
*
May Gibbs
*
May Gibbs was an author
And she was famous too,
For writing books for children,
As authors often do.
She wrote about 'Gumnut Babies';
Her books were widely read.
Australian mothers read the books
To sleepy children in bed.
*
A modern version
*
Now, in the 'Gumnut Babies'
An awful villain appeared;
He was the dreadful Banksia Man,
By all the Gumnuts feared!
*
An original drawing.
*
It doesn't take much imagination
To see from whence he came!
I wonder what Joseph Banks would have felt
About the villain's name!
