KNOCK KNOCK!
When Opportunity knocks
Think and think again;
Maybe joy is beyond that door;
Maybe grief and pain.
For Opportunity is two-faced;
It's claims are so inviting.
The very word seems synonymous
With a future that's exciting.
Yet many a snake-oil merchant
Has used that very word,
Making claims that are later proved
To be patently absurd.
One's instincts are so vital,
When opportunity comes your way.
Look behind the weasle words
The offerer may say.
Better an opportunity missed
Than an action you'll regret.
Turn away from the pyramid scheme
Or the very unlikely bet.
But if an opportunity presents itself
Right out of the blue,
And you're absolutely certain
That it's exactly right for you,
Grab it with both hands, my friend,
Take the ball and run,
Step out from under the looming clouds
And take your place in the sun.

OPTICAL ILLUSION
A pin-head moon in a great expanse of never-ending sky
Will later appear as a great balloon and we all wonder why.
Here the early morning moon swims in the azure air;
So small it seems we hardly notice that it's even there!
At other times an enormous globe seems to touch the earth,
Amazing us with its brilliance and its enormous girth.
When we see the moon with enormous space milling all around it
It looks so very tiny it's amazing that we found it!
But see it on the horizon and we can't help comparing
With trees and buildings and other things at which we're also staring.
I find this theory very nearly to simple too believe,
But at least it proves that the Man in the Moon has the power to deceive.

ReplyDeletelovely poems! Really like the second one
ReplyDeleteI loved Optical Illusion. Poetry about the moon makes me happy :) And that last line was the perfect end.
ReplyDeleteA superb poem on opportunity knocking, I totally enjoyed it, and the following one about the moon too!
ReplyDeleteIf only opportunities were that clear-clut. Perhaps I'm thinking to big. There are life's little offerings that we all can take advantage of, and which we all take for granted all too much. Thank you for that reminder.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like we took opposite ends of the same idea for opportunity. I love your gift with poetry. The moon poem took my breath away. Well done.
ReplyDeleteLoved your opportunity poem. Sometimes we forget that the word also has a negative connotation.
ReplyDeleteQuite true, one must always watch out for the 'opportunities' offered by shysters and con-men.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more. Seize the day. Learn the lesson.
